What makes a dog or why does?

I was just curious to why a dog or some dog or certain lines of hounds pass coons up?

I personally don't like this and is it a trait or individual to each dog?

I don't have a dog that does this but I have hunted with some and was sitting here with a bad case of cabin fever thinking and thought about this with no answer so I thought would some opinion on this

Passing coons up

In my opinion it is caused by multiple issues.

1-Some dogs are bred for so much (GET GONE) in them that they forget to slow down and start looking for a coon immediately off the chain.

2-Some of these dogs do not have the nose power or desire to stop and work a coon track that has little to no smell to it.

3-Some dogs lack the ability/desire to work air currents. Thus coons that have been sitting up for hours now have little scent lying on the ground, but there is still scent floating in the air for a dog that has the ability/desire to zero in on it.

Again just my opinion.

Be careful Rockie those Cabin Fever Blues will cause gray hair... lol.
Based upon your question you have asked a tough one for a real answer most responses we be of one's opinions. On the other hand I have hunted those kind in which found new addresses. But rocketman55 and I have to agree on this one. I may add that in my opinion the bottom line is lack of nose and lack of track ability and coon sense Better known as brains... You will see this more out of the hotter nosed hounds then the colder nosed ones. It is one of those things that separate the hide hound that are usually extremely accurate and just a good ol fashion coon dog vs. The 50 % accurate competition hound better known as a pop up tree dogs. The pop up dogs can't run the track of the colder nosed pleasure dog can. Cold nosed dogs in my experience are more accurate and tree more coons the then pop up hot nosed hounds do. So bottom line is what do you want? Pleasure or Competition? And believe me they are different maybe not all but the majority are two totally different hounds. I was in a conversation early today that brought up the going deep subject. I have bought hounds from Nebraska Illinois Indiana Ohio Texas Virginia WV and NC. Only two of them went deep when they had too in thin coons here in the mountains of WV but I never had a dog tree behind them when they went deep. My new female is said to be that way but thus far she hasn't had to get deep. Also in my experience a true coon dog already knows where he is going by the time you unleash him. I have seen Roofus do it many of nights. He left the leash with his nose in the air.

What lines are best suited for good nose track dogs that are accurate.
