Exact procedure for taking care of snake bit dogs?

All this talk about snakes has me worried that if my dogs get but I will not know exactly what to do? Can someone explain step for step what to do to make sure the dog survives ect.? Much appreciated I am new so I know it's bound to happen, just hasn't yet thank goodness.

copperheads are the only ones i seen personally rattlers i think will kill them very shortly.I gave mine doses of penicillin shots twice a day and put a sqiirrel cage blower on him to keep him cool.I found out that he really liked to take baths at this time also. The hardest thing was getting him to eat.He went from around 60 lbs to 30 or 40 he was all skinn and bones til his app came back.Good luck with them if they get bit.

Keep a bottle of benadryl in the truck for copperheads. We had a black dog when I was a boy named Rattler who got hit by a rattler, go figure. He got it in the right back leg and it swelled and rotted out something fierce. Stunk and turned black and everything. I don't know exactly what Dad did for him but in a month or so he was completely healed and lived and hunted for another 7 or 8 years after that. The whole time he was up he acted just fine, Dad just wouldn't take him hunting til he healed. It was a mess but he came out of it fine. That was in the back leg, if a rattler hit one in the face or near the collar it'd be over for sure based on what I've seen from that dog. No way something could live thru that around the head/neck area. Just my observation, but 1 benadryl pill at the truck takes the swelling out pretty quick.

Penicillin and Benadryl works but if your not right with em when it happens they may not make it anyway, just depends on the dog, Ive seen bird dogs get hit by big rattlers and live if you can control the swelling.

Ive head a bunch of dogs get bit by copperheads and you don't have to do anything. Yep, you heard that right nothing. They do swell and get sick but I guarantee you they will Not die. They want even know they were bitten in a day or two. Rattlers, the dog takes it a lot harder. They swell a lot more. Sometimes even bust and bleed like hell. Their leg or foot will get the size of a saucer an bust open. Around the head and neck (if bitten) its much worse because of air intake. Take him to vet fast!!! Rattlers that bite dogs in the side, leg , or foot won't kill them either...but you and the dog will think he's going to die. I got big by a copperhead about 18 years ago doing something stupid and I got sick like never before. It lasted about two hours and I laid in the floor thinking I was going to die. I hurt so bad I couldn't get up to go to the doctor, and didn't. However, after about 3 hours I got compeletly ok.

Dexamethasone will bring the swelling down. I know people in the Carolinas that have had dogs bit on the head by rattlers and did not die. They wrote the experience and what the they in a book. Also showed a picture of one dog with his head swollen like a melon... and did not die.

Good question... Never had any experience with them myself but by the size of them I'd say more like a rattler.

1/2 cc of Dexamethasone IM if you have it or 10 mg Prednisone. Otherwise, 4 Benadril pills when you first notice that they have been bit and then 1 every 4 hrs for a day. Just about any antibiotic that you have will help, Pennicillin, Ceflex, Cipro. Give them the antibiotic as directed just like they were humans. Or just leave them alone and it will get infected, bust open, drain and smell/look awful but they won't die. If they are going to die, it will happen in the first 10-30 min and there isn't much that you can do about it. The severity of the bite depends on the type and size of the snake and how much venom he/she injects. This depends on how long it has been since the snake bit something else. They inject most of their venom when they bite and it takes them 24 hrs to produce more. So, if they have killed something and ate it in the last 12 hrs, then the bite won't be as bad.

I have had several bit by moccasins, all have survived (knock on wood)

Had a 65# 2 yr old male bluetick bit by a moccasin Saturday night (today is Thur). Shortly after being bit the dog was shaking pretty bad and almost unable to walk (got bit in rear leg).

I'm not a vet, but this is what I do... get them to the house asap, keep them warm w/ plenty of fresh water available. Give antibiotics as soon as possible (Jefferspets.com has 100 ml bottle of pro-pen-g for $8). dosage is 1 cc (1 ml is =to 1 cc) per 10 pounds of body weight once a day, either sub Q (under the skin) or intramuscularly(deep into muscle)- I prefer sub-q, as the withdrawl time will sometimes cause a temporary "lump" in muscle.

In most situations, if they are going to die from the venom, it will happen in less than an hour. The antibiotics are for secondary infection.

Expect massive swelling in and around the bite site- don't lance, will only make infection more likely.

The above dog that was bit Sat night swoll up pretty bad, didn't eat for about 24 hours and layed in his house for 2 days but today is Thursday and he acting like nothing happened- swelling is gone and he is jumping up and down like his leg is fine.

Never tried the Benadryl as listed above, but it probably can't hurt and I may try in the future.

GOOD LUCK!

Also forgot to mention, if bit in the neck, the swelling may cause the airway to close, so better get to a vet- they can do a tracheotomy and keep alive till swelling subsides.

I'm going to add one other thing to snake bite treatment ....we do the benedryl & penicillin - but I also shave the bite with hair clippers & put a glob of Prid drawing salve on it . Prid is an old time homeopathic salve works great on drawing out infection & the poison - also works on thorns & ect on your dog & yourself . It's found in many pharmacies , small orange tin can .

You can get a Rattle Snake vaccine to give your dogs if you hunt in places that has them and it is supposed to help them to heal quicker and not be as hard on them. I give my dogs the vaccine, but I've never had one get bit.

Guys it may sound stupid but it works. When my dogs get snake bit I feed them a can of cream just plain ol cream in a can. It will take the swelling down and usually in a few days the are back to normal. It has worked for me a time and time again. Give it a try.

Good stuff,we also used to keep a bottle of turpentine in our truck ,just hold the dog down put the bottle opened up on the bite turn it up side down and you can watch it pull the venom out of the dog . It will be yellowish then it turns pink as you start to see the good blood coming out ,works good in just minutes .

during snake season i keep on me a few tabs of prednisone and a few beniyidril. as soon as i become aware of a snake bite i give one benedyril and one prednisone and repeat in an hour and again in 4 hours. then i play it by ear. i haven't had done anything for infections because they never get infected, so far.

There is a product called DMSO it's 99percent pure Dimethyl Sulfoxide comes in liquid roll on or gel. Everyone tells me to get the gel. I bought a 4 oz jar yesterday at the local Co op for 5.29$ Some coo hunters here in west Tn swear by it they tell me to rub it on Cottonmouth bites with latex gloves 10min latter you will see the poison run out. These men tried it on a bite an hunted the dog the next nite. I've never used it hope I don't have to but it's worth checking into.

I wouldn't advise using DMSO. It is an ingredient used in many horse liniments to help absorb the active ingredients. It is rapidly absorbed through skin. If you get it on your bare hands, you can taste it in your mouth within a minute. Seems to me, that's the opposite of what you'd want to do with snake venom.
