Mark Twain National Forest

Does anybody hunt there and if so how is the hunting? Are there any clubs in the area around Ava, Ozark, or close to Branson.

Hunted there for a little over 2 hrs once I hope I never go back. Couldnt even begin to tell you what part we was in. All I seen was whiporwills lol it looked real good just no coon there and I know we had to have had at least one dog that could tree a coon on the cast. good luck

Thanks Pete, I would like to hear from some coon hunters in that area. May be moving to that area just wanting to get some input. I know there has to be coon hunters around there.

Mark Twain

I used to live down outside of West Plains,me and my cousins hunted it a lot,we did tree coon, but not a lot of coon, but we lacked dog power and a bright enough light to shine those tall pines and oaks, the Ozarks will put a dog and hunter to the test! One thing for sure if you can tree coon on a regular basis you can tree em any where in the country!

Drivin through there a couple times, I'd say if a man hunts that country 5-6 nights a week he's definitely a Coonhunter!
If that's all I had to hunt I'd find something else to do. Lol

Well you guys have talked me out of moving east of Branson. How about to the west? Is the hunting better? Are there plenty of areas to hunt?

The UKC clubs near me are Seneca , Aurora , Nevada & Wentworth Mo . All are pretty good hunting . At the Seneca club you will quite often be guided into the edge of OK & sometimes KS near Baxter Springs - great hunting there (it's not to far from Girard where they will hold a zone) . Nevada hunting is flat ground lots of crops . I hunt at Wentworth alot in $KC cause it's pretty close to home on week night hunts big timber , some crops , few rolling hills but mostly pretty flat & farms . Aurora pretty much the same way . Now if you head south from here you better have a dog that will go hunting & can find a coon - there are plenty of them if you don't mind the HILLS as we call them lol & a dog that can handle water on our flat land ther are rivers , creeks & flooded areas for duck lakes .The Mark Twain is pretty rough - especially if you and your dog didn't migrate here from Northern Arkansas . Springfield area is good but when you get close to Ozark & Branson your back in the Ozark Mountains .

I appreciate all of the input. I really like the area around Branson as far as the mountain views, golf courses, etc. but I don't like what I'm hearing about the terrain when it comes to coon hunting. I don't want to live in town so I may look west and north within a hours drive. Where I hunt in central la. we have all kinds of terrain except for the mountains. We have creek bottoms, swamps, beaver ponds, thickets, and cutovers and very few coons. Last thurs. my dog went 900 yds to strike and another 800 to tree the coon. I went over my hip boots in a beaver pond and over my head in a creek (not recommended) and went through a cutover to get to her. Fortunately she had the coon or I may have shot her and myself lol. So I don't think the hunting could be any worse.

i live in willow springs mo

i was born and raised here and hunted it all my life i usually only go to the mark twain after season is over because theres alot of hunting pressure on it and only hunt my private places durring season...but one thing about the goverment woods is you better be ready for some really rough walking theres places out there that will really take it out of you thats for sure but its nice being so close to it i like being able to be right next to thousands of continuous acres with no houses at all and ive gotten into alot of coons out there thats for sure

Steven, most of the land I hunt here is government land. Almost all of the other land is timber company land and a lot of them don't allow dogs. Is it very hard to find private land to hunt up there?

Thanks for the invite David, I may just take you up on it. My dogs will tree one every now and then. They may lose their mind in thick coons. I may go to ukc walker days and if I do I may swing through there
