opposum breaking 101

Just curious how you all break your dogs off opposums. My pup treed two tonight and its time he learns his lesson. The first one i just pulled him off and sent him on. He tried comeing back and i let him know we dont do that. He went about 500 yds and kinda just fell treed again. By the time me and my buddies got in their their dogs were their to. I waited till they got their dogs and got them out of the war zone. I tied him up and shook the thing out. Soon as he grabed it i picked it up and way layed him with it and when i was done he wouldnt even look at it. Just wondered if their was a better way?

Tri-tronicis shock collar. Pretty simple and very effective. If I see they have a possum, I turn around walk away without acknowledging the dog, get a few yards away and hit them with a mid level sensation. If the dog has any kind of brain, they get the picture pretty quick. Never has made much sense to knock something out of the tree and then proceed to overhaul them with it. It is pretty confusing for your dog since coons also fall from the tree as a reward. Just a side note, I found this method in the "Walk With Wick" book, if it isn't in your arsenal of training tools, go get it. Both volumes are worth owning.

I've never really had too get on my dogs to much for possums , I just lead them away from tree , not peting them up . Maybe telling telling them no a few thimes . Thay wil soon find out that's not what your looking for.
I seen over the last 20 years is the more coons thay tree , the less possums thay will miss with.

Putting game out to a dog is rewarding that dog for treeing the game. Never put a possum out to a coondog unless you want it to tree more possums. I learned that the hard way.

Every dog is different on how it reacts on different style training methods. I've seen some dogs ruined by their owners trying to shock the dogs off of opossums, took the tree right out of em and I've seen guys shake the opossum out and as soon as they grabbed it they lit em up and that has broke them also. My dog treed his first one when he was 9 months old, shook out it to him and soon as he grabbed it he got lit up, guess what, 3 years old and ain't never treed another one, I broke him the same way treeing squirrels. What always is good for the goose isn't necessary good for the gander. Just be careful and know your dog before you start sending 440 volts through its head.

him not paying attention to the possum after u whooped him with it is only natural...... if u dont think so next time he trees a coon shoot it out and beat the holy dog snot out of him with it i bet u 100 he doesnt pay attention to it either... by shooting off gasme to him the shcoking or whooping him only creates confusion

I don't believe in disciplining a dog on the tree for possums. Don't believe in shooting one out to a dog and then correcting it. Shooting out is suppose to be rewarding the dog. wait until the dog trees one that can be shook out then when he grabs it tie into his butt, either physically or with the ecollar. enought repartions will usually get the point across. However I had a hardcase that that wouldn't respond to any of that. I finally trapped one and beat the dog with it then took a piece of trapping wire and put it around the possums neck and wired it about 4 inches off the dogs collar buckle. Everytime the dog ate or drank the possum was swinging right at the dogs nose. It was hot weather and after a few days it got rank. He would lay in his house and have the possum hanging on the outside just to get away from it. When I finally took it off he was a broke dog. Never treed another or covered another on one.

I disagree with some of you here on this one . I'm not much on shocking a dog at the tree - rarely use shockers at all . But in this situation & since this is a pup that has treed many coon on his own, this is what I would do & have broke several over the years . Go to tree like normal (make sure there is no coon there too - it happens ) shoot it out , the moment the dog touches it bump him with the shocker , he will go in to do it again , shock him again . He will get the picture and will want nothing to do with the possum - those things have electricity in them . Lead him off a ways & send him on . Usually just 2 or 3x & no more possum problem . This method will not affect your pup @ the tree , he's to young to be shocked while treeing & many with a button in thier hand have ruined nice young ones like yours . If he hadn't been consistantly treeing his own coon I'd tell you to just lead him off , but even though he's young , from your posts it looks like he's been doing it on his own for awhile , time he knows his true purpose in life .

IF your dog is not smart enough to know the difference between a coon and a possum when you knock it out and whip it with it then you may need a new dog.

IF the dog is treeing good you won't hurt its treeing ability by knocking out a possum to it and whipping it with the possum.

Guys I believe the DOG in question here is Ol Hoss's 9-10 month old PUP . Not an older dog who should know the difference on what he can & cannot tree yet . A but whopping isn't gonna hurt him if he knows what it's for .
Keep hunting him Hoss & rewarding him with the occassional coon & petting him up when he does it right . He's to young for extreme measures to be taken or for being fried up while treeing .

Its a whole lot easier to just set um up where they can find one on the ground and hit the juice button when they grab it. NO trees involved and a healthy fear of possums.

I agree 100%. I've had the best luck this way. If you have a dog with any brains don't take much. I've seen a lot guys shock their dogs off of opossums while they were treed and if didn't affect their treeing ability it affected them in other ways like walking into a tree for a mile and right before you get them they realize your almost there and they leave the tree, I've seen this a lot and some dogs you just can't break cause the brains out there.

Yeah its my 10 month old pup. Hes been treeing coons by his self since he was 6 months old. Been doing really well here lately. Been getting split treed with the meat and looking really good. He hasnt had alot of coons but recently
I had my dad tag along to shoot some out. Put 3 out on him last week. It seems like he does alot better in high coon populations. But when you turn him loose in low coon population he just wants to tree opposums. I dont think he knows exactly what i want from him yet. Im gonna keep trien the shake out and beat method and if that doesnt work ill try the tieing one around his neck for a few days. Hopefully he will learn cause i cant put up with this opposum treeing. Hes a really hard tree dog that is very accurate. When he trees hes got
Something. I just dont want it to be a opposum. Id rather he not make a tree at
All if its gonna be a slick tail.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Best method for me is teaching a dog what " NO! " means before I ever take them hunting.
