What gets more coon caught? Simple, first of all, it isn't a bait. It is trap location, trap location, and trap location.
Since you did ask about bait, I use vanilla to pull them in, and I use large marshmellows to seal the deal. I much prefer large marshmellows over the smaller variety. I will take 1 or 2 marshmellows and rip them into dime sized pieces. They work better when they are sticky. Then I lead a small trail of small pieces into the trap. I place whole marshmellows behind the trigger.
Now when you set a live trap set it as if your are trapping a trap shy animal. Nine times out of ten you aren't going to have a trap shy animal, but why not be prepared if one happens along. Trap must set level and does not rock. Then I use the natural ground cover to completely cover the wire mesh bottom. I use just enough natural cover to break up the trap's outline, but leave it so the animal can still see through it. Now set the trap and snap it off several times adjust the pan to trigger with about 1/2-1 lb pressure.
There ya go.
