I live in Pike County Ky. Our coonhunting has been extremely tough. I have only killed 5 or 6 since season came in back in October. The coons was hit hard this year by a disease called distemper according to the fish and wildlife department. I went from having pictures of 6 coons on my trail camera in August to not having a picture from September Til now. Made 1 tree with my young dog and it was a den. It sure makes it rough on the young dogs.

poor coon season

The coon population in the places that I hunt is extremely low.I have hunted these same areas for years and this is the worst season since the '76 season, and that was due to having too much snow. But,I don't hunt cornfields,I like the mountains where I don't tree in someones yard, and there aren't any acorns in these mountains. good hunting to all of you.

22 nights/ 66 coon seen

Dogs have treed 66 coon here in eastern Ohio. A few dens and a couple of pines and 2 for sure slicks. I have hunted harder in other years but my nightly average is 3 coon a night, best year I have ever had in that regards! Ron Jackson

Ouch man I feel for you. I have seen lean years (though not that lean) around here after a distemper outbreak. This year, though I haven't hunted near as much as I should have, our coon population seems to be the best it has been in many years. With the promise of big $$ for coon (which seems to have passed now) I feared the woods would be full of hunters and trappers, but though there is definatly a influx of trappers this year, I have seen lower than normal hunting pressure when I've been out. I read on trapperman.com that nation wide the catch is way down though. Also read for those that don't know, the coon market is expected to crash very soon!

I'm

A big deer hunter. My family never ran dogs during deer season. Just a excuse but I our coons this I just don't know something weird happened this year I believe due to a almost zero acorn crop. It has effect coon movement drastically. I've only been a few nights since deer season went out and I haven't caught one on the outside much less put my dog on a coon track. I don't have corn fields or bottom land to hunt I live in mountains in the Alleghany Highlands of Virginia. My dogs rig off the truck and walk hunt as well but rigging off the truck allows me to cover tons of ground in short time and I've had trouble just even getting a strike. Ride for miles and miles and not even get a strike off the truck some is weird wrong. Coons are laying low saving their energy or something not sure what's going on. I have a friend that has been hunting more than me one night he'll tree 2-3 coons and then the next 3 or 4 nights won't even strike a track.

Good so far

I live in N. Central WV and haven't had any problem treeing coon. I don't hunt near as hard as I used to but we've only gone a couple of nights without seeing coon. Me and my friend Tim hunt together and we've probably seen between 40 to 50 sense season came in and we didn't hunt at all in deer season which lasted for a month. Coon population seems good in these parts although we had no acorn crop at all. After this hard freeze, they should be out in force. Remember to save some for next year.

coons

I live in Mt. Storm W.Va and things has been funny up this way. There is a few more hunters out but I don't think much dog power so I don't think that's the deal. I haven't been out much in season but things are off on my coon population. I ran coon with snow on the ground and single digit temps before and this year I haven't tracked a coon through November or December and I was all over in bear season. I don't know if they're laid up or died off but things need to change around here.

Been slow

This season has been pretty tough so far, I have killed abt 12 coons this year. The coons on WMA are thin, it takes a real good to tree one there. Since deer season has closed I've had better luck on some of my private spots. I have been trying to get a pup going this year also and it has been real tough on him when the coons are thin around here.

My buddy I hunt with had a really nice dog a few years back, and it done the same thing to him. He was hunting him in a Nite hunt and he turned his dog lose and he didnt go but about 20 yards and had blood coming from his butt. Took him to the vet and the vet said that his stomach got twisted, he was about 4 years old also. Sorry for your loss.

Had a good night

Me and Lil got our limit in a couple hours. Worked one a half mile and the 2nd coon she worked out a tough feeding track got it worked up hot and treed him. Had a ball listening to Lil do her thing!

My buddy Atley with his blue gyp Dot and Cameron with his walker Crown also got there Limit.
