High Tans

I was wondering if anyone ever see's any of the old high tan looking redbones. I'm not talking about the Black and Tan ones that show up here and there . I mean the redbone that has a black or very dark brown "saddle' between their shoulders and hips. I remember seeing one when I was a kid. but have not seen one in many years.
Danny ,do you have any pictures of one?

I had one, sold her to a b&t man in IL, she accidentally got bred, and lost it after giving birth. I will look to see if I can find pics of her younger and older, her son also had onethat was kind of nnoticeable.

At one time in the distant past, when UKC coonhound breeds were just sorting out, there was actually a move afoot to have a breed called "saddleback" that ws that coloration. I'll go back to my history books and see if I can find some names and dates and bloodlines. I've seen pix of dogs that were almost as strongly saddled as some bloodhounds are.

THE KEY IS "DARK RED SADDLE" A SADDLE BACK HAS A BLACK SADDLE AND IS MORE A BROWN COLOR

saddle back black and tan

I have owned a few in my day but you don't see many any more, but that was back when there were a lot more cross bred hounds around, now mostly pure bred hounds,

I've done a little reading on the origin of the redbone breed in the past. What I had read was that our breed had started with the cross of the Bloodhound and the English foxhound and a Irish hound was later crossed in as well. What I read said that the saddleback coloring in some dogs came from the Bloodhound and that the white that showed up in some came from the Irish hound. Also the explaination for why Black and Tans show up sometimes was because the Redbone and Black and Tan came from basically the same origin.

Anyone who has some expierence in breeding knows how things like this can skip SEVERAL generations and pop back up years later out of no where. Also we all know ALL coonhound breeds have probally been crossbred many times in the past as well so maybe its just that that causes these things to pop back up too.

Don't see them

It is something I have been wondering about. We still see Black and Tan redbones and we see redbones with big white bumpers but you never see the Saddleback High Tans anymore. I would love o see a living one again. I agree the pics are not saddlebacks. he dogs I remember were lighter red and black saddles with little bit of red hairs all thru . You can still find Bloodhounds with this kind of makings.

High Tans/Saddlebacks

I currently have a male dog that we kept out of a litter we raised. He is a high tan. He is 3 now.. and he is an awesome coonhound. Both parents were registered Redbones.

Cool

Lets see a pic. Keep in mind the old high tans had no black on their neck or heads, those are Black and Tan redbones. The black would be only on their back and sides.
