Trach breaking

I remember some of you guys talking about a scent solution yall had used to help break your hounds from running deer. I would like a little info on that product, it's name, how to use it,and how well it worked for you. I have a young dog and I would like to start him out without a shocking collar or having to whip on him. Thanks.

Mr Barnett, use "goat scent". Just buy a goat and put him/her in the kennel with your dog for a couple of weeks. I don't think that it matters what "brand" of goat you buy.

Goat scent!!

I have goats right next to my dog pens and my young dogs never run deer, even with my running walker coyote hounds, they almost never mess with deer.
So you may be on to something.

Goats

I have a couple goats that are pastured next to the dog lot. The dogs get to run out there some. Dogs are for sure goat broke. The goats teach the dogs real quick not to mess with them. I think it might help with the deer.
You can buy a goat for $100 or less I think.

Wink goat scent

That's a good idea. When I get my dog broke I can BBQ the goat. I don't have a place for a goat. I would like something in a bottle.

Just browsing through & came across this thread ...until now had never thought much about goats & dogs till now but you all are on to something . Years ago when my Mafia dog was a pup my daughter got a baby goat for her birthday . The dang thing could get out of anything we penned her in so finally we gave up and just let her run loose . My pups have always run loose (& now everybody elses too lol looks like a zoo out there half the time) this goat & Mafia grew up together ate from the same bowl & she would get in his dog house till they both wouldn't fit anymore . This goat thought it was a dog ! I have know that goats & deer have primarily the same diet so it would make sense that they would put off alot of the same scent . I whipped Mafia for running deer 2 x in his now 7 yrs of life ...they never were a problem . May have to get another yard goat - but the roses are just now starting to come back lol .

You put the goat in the kennel with the dog. You can get a small goat. It doesn't have to be a big one.

Does the color of the goat matter? Would a brown one be better than a black one? What if my dog eats the small goat? Do I have a bigger problem then? Should then I get a bigger meaner goat? This is getting deep. How about a pigmy billy goat? Don't they put off more scent? I know the little one at my house stinks real bad? Would this help for rutting deer? .

I think we need a book wrote about this. So many questions!! I like this forum there is a lot of great knowledge here. .

Jared, you put your goats at the far end of your property from the hounds. You need to move them right up next to the dog kennels.

You guys are about 50 years late----

Mr Dorman Clouse wrote about this in the early 60's in his column in Full Cry. (Putting a goat with your deer runners)

You young kids, like King Richard---

didn't get to see Mr. Clouse's column he wrote about "how lucky our wife's were, that we coon hunted at night, Because we could be sitting in some bar watching girls dancing on tables."

This was in the early 70's and I know one young lady, at that time, that wanted to call a Mr. Clouse and let him know how dam lucky he was that his wife wasn't one of the DANCERS!!

I never pointed that subject out again, because she was right.
