:)

Its against the law in most of the United States. Most people say they would rather shoot there dog then have it run a deer.

thats is not true i am an avid rabbit beagler but got my start in deer beagles, they r a lot of fun also i would not shoot any dog for running deer but better yet if i cant break him give him to a kid that can and wants to run deer with him ........also i have seen some of the best deer dogs also run other game such as coyote and fox really well .....so my advice is if u r looking for a deer beagle look in the nc and sc areas b/c i know those guys can stiil run deer with there dogs also in the virgina area

Here in VA we not only run beagles on deer but we run foxhounds on deer, coonhounds, really anything that will take the track and make noise doing it! You haven't heard a chase until you hear 8-10 beagles and or big hounds chasing a big buck through the thicket. It'll make chills run up and down your spine!

chessy, give me a call (317) 691-9522 or shoot me an e-mail. I may have a prospect or two that are already in Canada. They are currently being run on fox, but if a couple of them don't make the grade for the fox trials, they would probably do just fine for deer camp. All are big (not oversized - just good-sized), strong, and healthy, and eligible for CKC registration.

oversized?

Isn' t that the problem with deer dogs. The good ones are very big. Like I know at some the N. Carolina events they say no more than 17" tall. (I think that it was a foz event) But a beagle isn't suppose to be more than 15" tall, I know it happens but wouldn't that be a problem with beagles.

Woodhill, any size beagle is acceptable to bring deer around. Most deer hunters don't want them pushed into the next county or province, so many prefer beagles for the job. It's not uncommon when you're breeding for 15" beagles and have large litters, for some to go over 15". It's been that way since beagles have been beagles - both field and show. The ones that are too large for the trials generally go to some very grateful hunters. They want the talent and stamina - they aren't much worried about that extra inch.

Canadian Beagle on Fox trials limit their hounds to 15" and are very strict about it, but then all they have in the pens are red or grey fox. The boys down south are a little more lenient on size with the 17" (and I don't blame them) because most of their pens have both coyote and fox in them. The fox trials are a growing sport, a lot because of the lack of rabbits in some areas. It's nothing for them to have 80+ entries at a regular club hunt.

I like all beagle field trials. Each has it's own aspect to enjoy, and nothing beats the fellowship of other dogfolk and the music of a pounding pack.

Just wondered who W. O. Holmes is. I have heard of Oliver Wendall Holmes. But heck, they don't let me out much.

Gee, I dunno, Jim. It could be Oliver Wendell Holmes for all I know... or or Orville Weddenbacher Holmes. It was a copy/paste deal where I simply liked liked what it said. I personally feel like I write better than anyone, so I changed my siggy just for you. Congratulations on your Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature.

And best of luck with your hounds, Woodhill. May they never want to smell anything but a rabbit's azz...(to spare your soul the torment, of course.)

And, hunting deer with dogs is still legal in many southern states and Canada, (whether you're comfortable with it or not. )

Edited because I left out Woodhill's name.

I have 12 deer beagles and love every time they strike trail and jump a deer. Nothing like hearing all of them blistrin 1. Get a beagle pup and drag back deer legs around for him get him real worked up then take the legs from him. Step 2 go shine deer at night and cut them loose!
