As far as coon hunters are concerned what you are really looking for is a lux reading. To simplify it you can think of it as how much of the light falls on the object you are shinning it on.
You see you can have a light that has a large lumen rating and it not be very bright at all. Lumen is the total out put of light.
You want a light that has a good lumen rating and a high lux reading. One without the other is not good.
You could have a light that is 2000 lumen and 10,000 Lux. That light would be a flood
You can have one that is 200 lumen and 50,000 lux. That light would be a small bright spot. That would be difficult to see to walk with and you would have to shine each limb inch by inch.
You could have a light that has 1000 lumen and 50,000 lux. That light would have a good size walking halo and a nice bright medium sized spot.
The size of the spot does not matter as far as to how far the light will shine only the lux reading. If it has a higher lux reading it will shine further brighter, it doesn't matter if the spot is large or small.
Now you run into the problem of misinformation. I have heard it said that a lux reading can be manipulated. Thats not true. It can be done improperly or lied about but not manipulated. There are only a very few lights out there that will actually do what they say they will. Very few.
