New to the blues

Guys I have hunted walkers all my life, but it's time to move elsewhere. They're everywhere and I want to look into promoting these blue hounds tht I've been a fan of since I was a young boy. I've hunted with a few pretty nice blue hounds over the years but I do not know much about the diff bloodlines and what's throwing what I want to be a part of a breed that's looking to make better dogs not make pedigrees. Things I'm looking for information on are lines known to throw these traits. Track driving ( still perform well in rough conditions), independent, accurate, a lot of heart ( wants to go hunting no matter alone or with company not lazy). I know finding all these in one dog prolly won't happen but independent and accurate are my big stress points I don't need 120 bpm tree dog. Thanks to everyone that reads this and thanks for helping me in my search of where I wanna start in this breed. God bless and happy hunting.

Brandon, I too switched breeds just 3 short years ago. I hunted Walkers for 20+ years. The dogs I had 20 years ago are not so different from the blue dogs I have today. I did not know much about the bloodlines when I started and most of the blue dogs I had been exposed too were Smokey River & Bullet bred dogs. I went out and hunted with several different lines as well as bought some from different lines in order to familiarize myself with them. I have found I like about all of them for something. I have also found I like the out crossed dogs better than the line bred blue dogs I have hunted with. This is just my personal opinion and of course purely derived from the dogs I have hunted with. My favorites have leaned toward the Hammer/Jet breeding crossed on the Smokey River/Echo bred hounds. I used to have to search for a walker pup that showed some independence...I have found you do not have to look far with the blues of today, independence abounds...in fact some have too much IMO. The blues still have big hound mouths, tracking ability, layup ability and the sense to put it all together with 2 shining down and rings on the tail. They still look like a hound should too. You are in good Blue dog country and shouldn't have any trouble finding dogs around you to hunt with and make educated decisions based on your experience. Good luck to you and I hope you find what you are looking for as much as I have.

Walkers 223

Take a look at the "Why and What?" thread on the Bluetick Breed General Discussion Board. There was some pretty good information on there if you can sort through it. lol.

Thanks guys

I hunted with an old smokey river blue dog years ago and he was a coon treeing machine but when the frost came in or if there was snow he wasn't worth much is that common in that line to not be very cold nosed? I love a dog that can get it done no matter the conditions. I also hunted with a NITECH female quite a bit that was hammer bred on top off NITECH killer. She was accurate nice mouth but wouldn't hunt a lick by herself. The one I probably liked the most was Grnitech Shady off of Pounder, but I only hunted with him once. Like you guys have said I need to go hunt with these diff lines which I agree a hundred % just trying to get down to what I may like the most. Thanks for all the info and keep it coming.

Depends on style you are looking for

If you want a blue dog that goes hunting looking for a tree with a coon it. Then give Tim Vaughn a call. The mad dog bloodline has a Moto. We are wanting to know where the coon has been we want to know where he is. By this I don't mean silent track dogs. I mean hounds that are looking to tree the coon and not prefer to trail one half the night. Tree the first coon up and stay. If the comes across a layup coon before a track tree it. If this style is what I are looking for. Then call Tim Vaughn. He will gladly help if he can notated what direction you go...Gerald
