petting a pup to much

What is everyones opinion about petting a pup? i was told by my granddaddy that you will ruin a hunting pup if you pet it to much when it is little and while you are training it. i was wondering what is everyones else thought about this. i dont want to ruin a good pup by petting too much. Thanks.

I think your grandaddy is WRONG.

Got two that are proof that ain't so. I think it helps build the trust between man and dog. I have gotten compliments on how my dogs handle and I think it is due to the loving on them when they are young. When you love on them or pet them they know you are happy with them. A dogs goal is to please the master.

Thanks to all that responded. sounds like your tried and true experiences is enough to make me believe petting them won't ruin them. i appreciate everyones advice. What i was really talking about was like the kids keeping them in the house some and holding and petting all the time. Looks like the conclusion is that it won't hurt and will probally help the dog when it is grown. Thanks.

to a extent.... i noticed my pup will leave the tree run to me so i will pet her. she goes back to the tree but still drives me nuts.ended up taking a lil switch and smacked her on the nose every time she would come in and semmed to fix it. my 2 year old male dog i let in the house but i honestly think it is possible to spoil a pup.

the more time you spend with a pup when it's young better off you will be when you start it will already know to come when you call it lead load but i really don't pet a young dog alot when i start them unless they do something postive lota times you pet a young dog everytime it comes in they want to hang around just to get some pettin

I agree that you need to handle them alot and you really can't over do it at home. But when you take them hunting you need to cut it off and pet them ONLY when they do good. Do not pet them if they hang around when the other dogs have left, that rewards them for staying. I put them back in the box if they stay at the truck.

Pet em up a bunch when they are little, that makes em really desire that praise. In the woods only when they have done something right, If you create a buddy that is content just to hang out with you then you have over done it. THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT.

I agree when I have pups here my kids play with them constantly petting playing rough housing with them I think it helps make a friendlier dog to an extent (some are just shy) Now once training starts they get pet when we feed then only when doing something good and never for hanging around my feet or coming to me off of a tree. When the start treeing I only give them a few pats on the back when the coon is there and nothing for nothing seen

i'm with bill(chew). i pet mine all the time except when i'm hunting and if one hangs around the truck. if one has decided its not going hunting or backing a dog, then i'll pet it anyway. sometimes one dog will get after a deer and the other dog will come to me. i'll pet her.
one time i was at the vet and a hunter had a hound on a lead. i went to pet the hound and the hunter told me to not pet her because she was a hunting dog. at that point i felt sorry for the hound. because she was a hunting dog, she had to suffer the lose of touch from others. poor hound.

I have heard that too, but I personally believe it is just an excuse for someone to treat their hound like cattle.

Completely and totally untrue about don't pet your pups.

The biggest thing to remember when training pups is also the most important rule when raising kids. Be consistent! If something is against the rules, it must be enforced each and every time. Teach your puppy what No means. Then only say No one time each and every time.

Puppies thrive on consistency.
