Garmin 220 compass issue.

About two or three times a night I will look at my compass screen(dog screen) and the compass will be off. I had an older magellan gps that sometimes you would have to move a few feet to get the compass to turn correctly, so I try that. Still doesnt work so I calibrate it. Sometimes it works for a while and sometimes I have to re calibrate a few minutes after. I use a Boss Magnum light and have tried with light on and off, but doesnt seem to matter. Any Help?

I look at screen more than two or three times, it just seems that is how often I need to recalibrate. Seems like it is happening more often now than before.

Garmin 220

Just curiours, are you talking about the compass that points out the direction of the dogs or your N, S, E, W compass? Which is under applications. Depending on where I am hunting I sometimes have trouble getting a signal on directional compass. I'm sorry, I guess you already said it was your dog compass. Not sure why that is happening, I rarely need to recalibrate my compass.

Mine now that it is older started doing the same thing. I think maybe it might have to do with either your location, hills or such not getting a good signal or what you might be wearing metal wise sometimes interefers with signals.
I dont worry about direction so much as it still points somewhat in the general direction the hounds are in.

Mine will say that the dogs are North if they are North, but the direction the arrow points might be South East. I find myself using my old style compass more and more

I guess the reason this concerns me is that I hunt a lot of small woods with roads around. Places that 300 yards to the Northwest is fine but 300 yards to the Northeast is bad

Yes I see what you mean there. And I have thought about that luckily I hunt in a fairly wide area where detail is not as important, but I can see where you could get in a jam quick if you dont have dead accuracy.
I dont really know what the answer is either maybe it's an update or upgrade issue also?? I've never upgraded mine yet and I know it's over due.
It would be nice to call garmin and ask, but they put you on hold forever.

I had the same problem. I updated it and did a master reset and it seems to have solved the issue.

My garmin 320 was doing that fairly often and we started paying close attention to it and tried everything to fix it when we realized it only messed up in certain hunting spots. But in those certain ones it always messed up which direction was N S E W and like you say if it said dogs were North they were but your compass might show North pointing to the west. In those hunting spots this happened there are oil pumps everywhere around us and me and my buddys garmin will both screw up mine might say north is east and his may point north to the west. We just assumed something to do with the oil pumps did it dont know though.

Do you have oil pumps around where yours does it?

I have hunted around oil wells, but I havent really noticed any difference. There doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to when it will or will not happen. Hills, flat ground, around structures or not. I have hunted with others with Garmins that have had the same issue, though not as much as me. I may have to calibrate twice the first dump, then we go somewhere else and they will but I wont.

Before you beat me up for asking this question I will make a statement.
Garmin put the compass page on their astro and you pay for it so it should work. I will agree with you 100% on that if that is your decision on wanting it to work properly.

Now with that said I don't see any purpose for that compass and since these have came out I have never used it for anything. Can someone educate me to it's value?

If I just wanted to know that my dog was in a certain direction then I listen for it or I use a lot cheaper system to tell me his direction. There are roads in every direction I turn loose so know he is going toward a road is a given. To look at the compass and see he is toward a road doesn't tell you that he is going toward the road, coming back or going parallel with it.

Why in the world would someone not just push the map button and see where their dog is in relation to the roads, creeks or other items on the map. You see just how far the dog is from you and you can see how far he is from a road and if he is going in the direction of the road. You can plan on what route to take to your dog also from that page. Now on the map page there is a little N for north in the top left corner and the only time I calibrate mine is if that N gets off. I have never calibrated one and the N not get back to working right. Even if it is off I still have the map to see just where my dog is.

Guess why this frustrates me is by just looking at that compass you are missing out on the best features your Garmin has to offer. Thats detailed maping of your dog along with any tracks you are placing on that map which allows you to see just what is going on.

Unless someone can tell me a value in that compass I wish Garmin would remove it. A feature with such little value keeps people from learning the true value of their system and at the same time keeps them frustrated with it if they thinks it isn't pointing right. Don't make sense to me.

Bruce,
I use my map dog direction arrow page, just as much as I do the map page. I flip back and forth when I'm training. My eye sight is not as good as it used to be and the compass & arrow pointing to my dog is easier for me to see and some times trying to stay right behind my dog thru thickets and heavy brush it's easier for me to course my hound by looking at that page and by also listening for my hound of course, but some of our small rolling hills and thickets the sound echoes and can mis lead you.
I agree the map page is a very valuable tool it sure teaches us that our hounds arent just randomly meandering thru the woods but have a keen sense of what they are doing
P.S. Still using my cats eye with the red, love it and still goin strong!!
Happy Tracks
Larry

I use my compass part alot to see how far and which direction the dogs are in mostly when I hunt with buddys and we have 2-4 or more dogs running different directions at same time. Its easier then map for that in my opinion. But I also flip between compass and map alot. And as far as just listening for your dogs I have slow nights that we make drops and dont hit a track so my dog doesnt open up to hear which direction he is in. I like the compass page.

Bruce,
Most important; when the hounds are treed and their mouths are echoing/bouncin thru the thickets and hills, it gets me to the tree quicker instead of strayin off course, like I was famous for doing in the past! LOL
Quote unquote '' I shore thought they was treed around the bend in that creek draw and not on the other side o that ridge??'' Hmmmm.....LOL!

I agree that the map page is probably a better option for most uses. When I most often use the dog page is for instance a piece of property I hunt is app 40 acres with about 20 of it woods. About 300 yards from the woods edge is a fairly busy highway. The map does not show a difference from the woods to the field. I turn loose and know that my dog can go South or West or any combination. Anywhere it goes East (of where I turn loose) is bad. The moment that dog gets to the field edge is to far for me. Also, in big woods I use it to tell the direction of the dogs in relation to me without having to zoom in or out. It is easier for me to say go a direction that an arrow points than to let the curser guide me. With a larger screen this would probably not be the case
