Hound/Cur Cross Question

I've got a really nice Walker bitch that I'm considering breeding to an OMCBA male dog. I'm a coonhunter. I'm not interested in sq. hunting. I want to make the cross because I mostly patch hunt (40 acre tracts) and want something that has a better handle than most hounds. I want something that hunts a little closer, but have no desire to walk hunt a dog.

I know breeding can be a crap shoot, but could breeding a good walker bitch to a cur male produce what I'm looking for?

Thanks for reading my post.

Bubba Billy Wilhite, you got to watch which line of OMCBA dog you make the cross with, as some have had a good dose of Walker blood over the years. Some OMCBA dogs these days look like hounds, sound like hounds, and hunt like hounds.

Bubba Markey, it's common knowledge up here on Sand Moutain, where they are no limits, and the season never ends.

The OMCBA dog I want to breed to belongs to a good friend of mine. He's heavy jukebox bred and is a really nice and accurate squirrel dog. I really like the way the curs hustle and "hunt out" the woods. I've seen alot of hounds these days that just Bee line out and get treed 3/4 of a mile away.

You can't have everything you want, but I would love to have a coondog that will range out 500-600yds and actually hunt out the woods.

My walker gyp is UKC registered, if I make this cross could I register the litter as "treeing cur" or will they have to be single registered?

Guys..I think you are going to be out of luck getting Ol' Orchid to post a picture of himself and his dogs...unless he finds a way to cut and paste one into his pen.

Billy, I've wanted to do the same thing for the same reasons for a number of years. If you've found a cur that interests you, you're ahead of the game.

I've been thinking about it for a while. Just got to go out on a limb and try it. I just now found a male cur that suits me. We took him coonhunting in the corn field one night and he did great, but those were super hot tracks.

I guess I'm just hesitant about this cross cause I'm out of my element dealing with curs. I've been studying Walker bloodlines for years and know alot more about them.

I know this is a loaded question, but what bloodlines of OMBCA curs make the better cooners?

Again, thanks for all the advice.

I patch hunt and have a 20 month old male 1/2 mtn cur 1/2 walker that money can't buy. I would make that cross in a heart beet. Best recipe to get what you are looking for IMO.

I think that would be a great cross. Juke box on a walker female, I had a tuff enough female that didn't want nothing to do with a sq but was a kill dog when it came to coons. I think it will work for you or you might want to do some lookin at the busher lines.

I would try a leopard. I have had mountain curs and leopards. I think you would like the leopard cross better or just get a leopard.

I've heard that more than once. I see Max has won his share of *kc hunts too. That's the type I'm looking for. I did squirrel hunt with a female off Max once, but was not impressed. I'm not looking for a squirrel dog though. I like my Clover bred Walkers, but I'm ready to get out of hounds and am looking for a multipurpose dog that would also be apart of the family. Something that can tree coon consistently with enough nose for a Minnesota hide season, with a handle that hunts a woods out.

I've thought about crossing on a leopard, but they are few and far between. I like what I hear about em. Saw a write up not too long ago about the McDill's Johnny Reb dogs, but they all seem to go back to Wick's Camo jug. You may be right, I might need to put some miles on the pickup and go hunt with a leopard.

I also saw where a leopard won the winter classic recently. Just want something that will hunt a good patch of woods out, before they blow through the country. I used to think a dog getting in there 3/4 of mile was really cool, but now I'm realizing that dog had to have passed up at least one or two coons.

Odds are that you will get what you are looking for out of a cross like this, but not necessarily from every individual pup in the litter. You will need to start, hunt and sort the whole litter to find your ideal.

It's not a new concept by any stretch. I know hunters who made hound cur crosses back in the '70s. They called them grade dogs then and more than a few got papers slapped on them.

On another note;
Mark, if argue with that idiot flower child long enough it becomes hard to distinguish who the idiot is. Why cater to the lowest common denominator.
