squirrel dog question

My son hunted over his first fice today and fell in love. In your opinion what is the best pup to get him? I want something that trees more by sight than scent. I noticed today he would bump a tree on scent. I would like to know what you guys hunt with. I'm looking a pup and can't spend a fortune.

We use mtn. Curs. They tree with nose and eyes. They do pretty good hunting both coons and squirrels. Start early too

I like curs better, if I was going to go fiest then I would go with barger or Mullins fiest. Maybe even a hybrid cross like Kemmer and fiest mix.

Take a minute and hunt with some more dogs before you rush into anything. I hunt Treeing curs, feist and hounds and like them all. I don't believe you'll be happy with a sight dog really. One that uses all it's senses is generally better and for me personally if my dogs could navigate BLIND I'd prefer them that way.It will boil down to the size of dog you want to keep most likely. Good dogs in every breed- If I knew how to post pics on here I'd also show you some sure enough feist COON dogs- don't think they can't get it done in the dark.

Mr Forrest;

Dean and I hunt some of the same bloodlines, and I agree with what he is saying on a "sight dog".

** I do a pretty good job on a squirrel I can see - don't need a dog lol.

A "sight only" dog just wont do around here for me, and the later in the season the more nose my dogs need.

Hunt with as many breeds, bloodlines as you can, and in the long run you will be happy.

You boys come on down here in these pine thickets green briar and bay bushes on the coast and you will see why I want a sight dog. I had one years ago and she would hunt about 100 yards around me and treed a pile of squirrels most of the places I hunt you can only see 40 or 50 yards in front of you and that's my open woods

Actually I spend a great deal of time hunting in areas just like that. I hunt with curs and they wind as much as they do anything and we are very successful. If it is that thick how would a dog see anything at all to sight tree from the ground?

Until you see it you can't comprehend it. I know what I'm looking and what I want and it's not a scent dog if it was I'd use one of the hounds in my kennel

The cur I hunt with placed 5th in the omcba world hunt. I've treed 30 something squirrels with him one day. He was the Alabama state champion this year too. Nice dog. He uses sight and nose

Sir- each to their own for certain. I've hunted squirrels all over these United States- literally. I have NEVER hunted anywhere that a sight dog will be more successful than one that uses it's nose at least as much. A dog that uses its nose to get to a track and then a tree will many times then WATCH that tree for a sq to timber. A hound won't generally do that is why pleasure hunters usually prefer one that will timber enabling them to kill a few more sq.

I havn't hunted all over the U S. But I have lived here on the coast of southside Va and NC for 64 years. A lot of the conditions are like Mr. Strickland says. Many places you either crawl under it, crawl over it or go around it. The squirrels around here spend a lot of time in this jungle for food and protection. Some places are wet most of the year.
When a local my age or older asks me about a dog, they almost always want a sight treeing dog.
Now saying that I hunt curs and treeing fice, because I do a lot of hunting within a couple of hundred miles of here, where a dog that has a good nose will show you more squirrels on the average.
Mr Strickland I wish I had a dog to fit what you want, hope you find a good one.

If you don't understand the difference between a hound and a cur as scent dogs you really need to get a sight dog.

Here is a hunt that came from exactly the kind of place you hunt, with curs.

You don't have to buy me anything, I have raised my own for years. Nor am I selling anything.

Leaving next Sunday to go to LBL for a week and I'll be pretty busy to Christmas. I will be in the eastern part of the state hunting several times after the first of the year. Probably any time then would be fine.

My OMCBA uses both. She releyes on her nose but I catch her watching and listening also. She has a real good nose but I do like it when I see her take off on a dead run after a squirrel she spotted. Can tell when she does that when I don't see her because of the whinning bark on her bolt. Most of the time she does that I can find the squirrel on the wood. We don't have near the thick woods you guys have. Never saw them but I can imagine. I'd be in real trouble down there. Spotting them in the tree isn't my strong suit. I can look at thin trees for 10 minutes sometimes don't see them when I know they are there. I have spotted a squirrel at times and tried to sneak around the other side and never saw the squirrel again and I couldn't see a hole in the tree anywhere. Sure is nice when there are a couple of you. I don't know how you would see them down there. Do you have a lot of trees that have foliage even in the winter? We don't up here. We do get some trees that seem to hold a lot of there leaves until the buds push them out in the spring but not many of them most trees here are as bare as a bone right now.

I'm new to squirrel hunting. I bought my 14 year old a mt feist last year as a pup.. I knew nothing about training or hunting one. He started on his own, treed a few around the yard. Great companion, wife loves him and trees the snot outa squirrels now and is just getting ready to turn a year old . Loves to ride in hunting truck and or 4 wheeler. hunts about 300-600 yards but stays closer if you dump him out in strange territory. trees mostly by sight but is starting to use his nose some, is more accurate when treeing by sight, will follow one timbering. He stays in the basement and wants to be with somebody 24/7. He is the best family/hunting dog I have ever owned period. We have had an absolute blast with him!
