Puppy Biting!

Hi all,

I have a 4 month old Redbone who is my first coonhound.

I understand that puppies bite but he seems to be really bad with the nipping.

I'm trying to socialize him right now so we bring him out in public a lot and of course everyone thinks he is adorable and wants to pet him. Every time anyone touches him he bites them or their clothing. This is a problem especially with children!

Also, when he gets really worked up when we are outside playing ball or something he goes into attack mode and jumps on and latches on to me and bites down REALLY hard (to the point where he will leave bruises under layers of clothes) I can't get him off and have to wrap the leash under his front legs just to pull him off me!

Is it normal for coonhound puppies to be especially bitey? We went to puppy obedience and the trainer said he would out grow this but i'm worried.

I've tried yelping, time outs, ignoring, etc but nothing is working

I was not going to reply but, I could not help it. Just remember puppy's are like small kid's. Mommy/Daddy, yes/no, good boy/good girl, correction/tuff love. Do not turn your head and hope he/she grows out of it. The pup is at the age where correction will impact how he/she will turn out down the road.

Quote; I've tried yelping, time outs, ignoring, etc but nothing is working.

Firm hand, let the pup know that no means no.
I hope this helps if not here is my number and I will let you know how I would handle it. It will only take a few times and he will not do it any more. Buck

Well

Sounds worse than it is but, slap his mouth every time he does it. Wear a glove so you don't tear up a finger on his teeth. You don't need to give him a concussion. Just a slap, so he doesn't like it and shout NO. The bigger he gets the harder you will have to be on him, so fix it now while he is small. It won't take much and you will have his full attention when you say NO. Be firm, you have to be the boss.
If you don't it could get real ugly down the road and he will not be good for anyone to be around.

Thank you for the replies, I've slapped him on the nose before but it didn't seem to help especially when he gets worked up. Is it ok to use a shock collar? I've heard you shouldn't use them on puppies?

You never use an e-collar for an aggression issue.
This needs to be cured now. It will get worse. The pup thinks its the pack leader. You need to teach it that you are the pack leader.
Call Buck.

Old Dorman Clouse would say ----

take a good chew, get it good and juicy and load it up with hot sauce, red hot pepper and the next time it bites----let him chew on that.

I broke two from biting by smacking their mouths and then flip them on their backs and yell at them. By putting them on their backs, it puts them in a submissive position and makes them know you're the boss. You don't have to beat dogs to make them see you're the boss. You just have to know how to put them in their place like another dog would. You're the big dog.

Dogs/pups are just like people/kids. Some you can just speak to sternly, some you can just switch, some you have to whip, and some are just a lost cause. Thankfully you can get rid of the lost causes and get another pup. Society frowns on trading off/selling one of your kids. Your own personality dictates what type of pup you can raise/train. Some people have to have a hard headed pup that they can holler at because they can't train a timid one. Some people need a timid pup because they can't train a hard headed one. You have to ask yourself, "which type am I", before you purchase a pup.

Ive been slapping him in the mouth when he tries to bite since yesterday. He howls at me like a little brat when he doesn't get his way. It's too early to tell if It's working or not. He is definetly hard headed and nothing seems to phase him. The obedience teacher nicknamed him "the terminator" because he would beat up all the other puppies in the class, even the Doberman! Haha he is a great pup though even though he can drive me nuts.

Make sure he knows you are the pack leader. If popping him on mouth dont work grab him and lay him down hold his body down with one and and neck down with other and shush him till he lays calmly this will take time at first. Once he lays calm for a little bit pet him and if he gets fired up do it again. This is what pack leaders will naturaly do to other dogs to show dominence. You have to be the leader. Have you worked him on a short leash that will help to. And him on a leash jerking everywhere is not work on a leash. Keep min slack and make him walk with you. Ive seen dogs become cowards due to people knocking them around for too long. Just throwing another option out there that works well for me. Good luck they will test you patience. But you can fix this.

Yeah Old Man if they can't be the leader, then they will just go off on their own. And John be careful, if you try too hard to break her she may get "independant".

Mr. King---

I'll never trade a "pack" working together to come down with a nice choir singing at the same tree. Like last night, good team work, nice picture of the "old Man" on one side of the tree and the "young Lady" on the other just singing away. But the best was when I unloaded the hounds and a boy told his Dad, "they look just like the ones in Where the Red Fern Grows" and the look of this 8 year old boy standing next to his first coon he harvested.

Independent---Maybe if more couples would learn to PACK, there would be less divorces??

I Love this post!!!! O how true this is. There truely is no sound like a PACK of hounds on track or at the tree. You are right on with the word CHOIR as it is made up of different voices. Thats what got me hooked as a young boy.

A fly swatter works great on young'uns, whether human or animal. After the first few times all you have to do is pick it up.

Lol ...the plastic spatula & the wooden spoon + the fly swatter a mama's arsenal , training my pups has been easier than my kids . I think the puppies are faster learners sometimes .
