Has anyone got any tricks they do to keep a coon from getting stuck in the tree such as shot placement or is long rifle better than short?

its gonna happen.
i try to put a good kill{head} shot on them,so they will kick themselves out.still hang 1-2 a season,hate when it happens.

We use a 22 mag it has a little more power without a huge hole. we try to shoot them right in the eye. Leaves one less hole to sew up and they hit the ground with no fight. The muscle twitching throws them right out without hanging up.

we keep a shotgun alot of times for that. Shoot a couple rounds of 12gauge at whatever its hung on.

There ain't much you can do. I like using the cb short rounds it don't kill them it makes them come down the tree

buy you a rossi 22/410 combo in the youth model . its comes in a very small case you can carry and never know its around your back , it might be the size of a telemetry tracker case but if the 22 wont do the job and it gets hung takes about 30 seconds to switch barrels , had one first night do same thing , switched barrels and rolled him

We had a big one die in a tree my dad shot him one time and he died in the tree and my dad tried for an hour to get that coon out with a 410 but it didn't work lol

I like your idea best. I once clipped a semi live Coon on to my sons hide carrier. He is a running back in football but i never saw him move that fast before or since.

Usually a head shot but try to center punch the eye ball or ear that will make the coon start shaking and come loose.....usually. That's what i've done if the coon ain't already dead.
