Season opened Saturday night, OLD Zach took off right were he left off last fall. Drove to Church yesterday in a light rain, Service just got started and the rain turned to Snow, by the time the Service was over we had just under 2 inches. Most had melted except on the north sides of the woods. Looked at 3 last night and that little girl that's full of "SHOW BLOOD", well lets just say she doesn't know that she's not suppose to pile into a live "ringtail" and get her pretty dark coat, long low set ears messed up!! Nope--no Trophy or win that will get her a Title, but when mouth, looks and desire are scored, she is on her way to being a winner. Well, it's suppose to be a warm 25 above tonight, sure hope the bugs aren't bad??
Time to load up and enjoy life.

She got on the wood and sounds like she will change that bawl to a chop. I like that but I'll take a bawl mouth tree hound over a chop track mouth, just me. Well, tonight it's suppose to be around 32 at 8 to 9 and Roy Blakesley said that that's tuff tracking right at freezing temps

FYI-Sundown Penny was a Grand Daughter of Lufcys Red Wrighter V bottom and his Great Grand Daughter on her top. Her Grandmother Blakesleys Billy Sue was out of Roy Blakesleys Captain Kid and Billy Jo.

If this cross happens and puppies are born, I know 2 things for sure: 1) they will never win the World Championship of any Registry and 2) they won't be able to drink out of any Coke Bottle. They should hunt and look like "Grand Pa's Redbones, won't please everyone but you should be able to hunt Cats-Bear and Coon with out any problem??

Will post later "IF" this happens.

PS, Katelynn Rose looked really good tonight. I really like how she was checking trees as she went. (Thanks to Tom Solberg for the lighted collars) and she got a work out with a big-n tonight. The little girl has grit!

Dave, My Mary Dog was origionally named Sundown Mary, Before I changed it to Hyner Mtn. Mary & Red Wrighter V was her sire..Loved that Dog..She would get off by herself & tree..always went the opp. of the other dogs..She would go til she found a coon Didn't have GPS back in those days lol..

His name is Zach----Named him after my "first" grandson. Did he run and tree his first night out-Nope. Was he treeing with old dogs at 4 months old--Nope. Does he throw dirt in your face and you will only get him off a tree "somewhere"--Nope. But he did show me that he was going to be a nice balance coon-HOUND. Good nose, good mouth, good tree hound and very nice handling hound in the woods or in the kennel. Are there better--sure. Would I trade him for them--Nope. Been in the woods with enough to know that "A good package" doesn't come often.

Zach is batting 100% on his trees so far this year. Tonight he started out by getting caught in a coyote trap, but I got him out with just a little blood, he went on to run one into a bull doze pile---that was fun getting him out of there!!!-- and than he treed two singles and they're hanging in the shed, so the trap doesn't look like it set him back any. If you liked him in Cuba---you would really think he's a different hound when it "harvest" time.

Been putting fur in the freezer every night so far. But my harvest is like this: I load up about 7PM and drive to a spot I've hunted dating back to 1956 when I started. Sure there are a few that have "new" land owners that say no, so I just move on to another. "If" we get a strike, I just set and listen to the music. Wait for the locate and than more music. I use two different color collars so it nice to see what the "young" one is doing?? The last couple she's be up on the tree, but she is just waiting so I've tied her back and got her fired back up last night, think I'll leave her home a couple of nights and let her think of what's she's missing.

Anyway, I'm happy with one a night, so we get back to the truck I head home, if they get another on the way to the truck--I go home with two. I only harvest one per tree and most nights I'm home for the 10 o'clock news.

The "BEST" thing so far in Zach's life and Rose's first season, they have only open on the "RIGHT" tracks. I have taken them both in a section I also coyote hunt and it's nothing to see 30-40 deer in a herd and both nights we have seen about 10 feeding in the bean fields and more running out of the corn. The last time they were working a track down by the creek, I heard deer busting brush behind us. That is also a very important trait I like to see in my hounds--being born deer proof.

Last night we have strong winds out of the west/northwest and they had a harder time. Took one out of the corn into the woods and Zach was locating of the wind and took him a while to get over to the "right" tree and we came home with one. Tied the little girl back and she could see and hear the action and went nuts. Just a pup.

Sorry that it's not the best picture of Zach, but they got this track going in a corn field and I thought they were going to catch it but there was one tiny little tree along a drainage ditch and that was what saved him. Just on the other side of this ditch was a 4 foot woven wire fence that would have bought some time for the hounds to get around. The pup was with on the track and when I got to the tree, she wanted to wait for me to bring him down---she found out that if you don't do the complete job, you don't get any action. She's learning.

Central part --- we have had Wolves past in the area, but haven't had any problems like North of us 60 miles. We do have coyotes and the LED collars I feel help a lot. One of the biggest reasons to stay out of the woods in May-June is mother yotes are VERY protective of their young and they will do lots of damage to a hound and really set a young one back to a point they may not hunt. You have to remember that Northern coyotes are larger than the southern type. We have taken some in the 50/60 pound range so their better than the Timbers, but they still are tuff.

I can tell you what I'm dealing with as I set on a log about a mile from the truck right now. I have one Redbone working an old track that has taken us out of the corn thru some hardwood, thanks for the log. And we are heading into some water-cattails-and a Freakn big swamp!!! Got to live it The pup is with him and I have seen her in front working it but hasn't said a lot yet
