Anyone ever use a hound to run rabbits and coon?

I have a young pup, that I'm pretty sure would run rabbits if I took her out in the day. I've thought about taking her for rabbits, but dont want her running rabbits all over the woods at night when I'm hunting coon.

Any thoughts

A lot if people will tell ya let them run them rabbits.It gives them experience but I would not recommend it.To me running a little trash is ok but if you let them away with it too many times it can be hard to break.I like a dog to run coon and coon only.Thats just me though.

i see lots of rabbits at night while hunting, if the dog is going to run it in the day they will run it at night too. better off breaking her unless you want too listen to your dog running rabbits all night

ya thats what I was afraid, thanks... kind of dumb question, but just thought I would ask rather then pondering over it, and possibly make a dumb decision.

I always let my pups run loose on the farm as much as possible. I have had several that would run rabbits for hours on end. I have never had a real problem with one running them at night. Almost all of them just switched right over to coon once they got a few tastes of coon fur in their mouths. Only one ever would run them for a little at night but as soon as she came across a coon she would switch off to that. Sounds like a winner don't she, run a little junk and switch off and tree a coon. Lol! Lots of the pups I have raised this way also would tree squirrel in the day but once I started them on coon they almost always leave the squirrels alone at night. My best dog still to this day will tree squirrels all day long and I have never looked up a tree at night and seen nothing but a squirrels nest. Pure coon dog as soon a the sun goes down. In my opinion it depends a little on the hound but, I really doubt you would have much of a problem. I also know of a very well respected Plott man who runs all of his coon dogs on coyotes first. The ones that get sick of running yotes all day and night and start falling off and treeing coon usually end up being the good ones. He says running yotes teaches them to run a track and I got to say, I have sure seen that point proven a time or two when I have drawn him in the night hunts.

When I was a kid my Dad had a Black & Tan female. Us kids would take her rabbit hunting in the day time with the beagles when she was young. Now my Dad didn't like it much so one day when he came home from work he heard her running rabbits with the beagles. He went and caught her and let her know he didn't want her running rabbits, lol. She never did run rabbits at night and us kids ran her on rabbits a few times after that while Dad was at work.

Don't know if you would get the same results with a different dog, but she was smart enough to know she wasn't supposed to run rabbits at night.

If your not real big into comp hunting it might make for a great experiment to see if this dog would catch on to the fact that you don't want it running rabbits at night but its ok in the day time.

i try to start and keep a young dog starting out on what im wanting it to run but i won't let them get started on trash i got a buddy that start a blue gyp last season never had no trsh problems he hunted her 1 nite with a young dog that he knew would flat out run a deer she hit 1 his gyp went with her she hit 2 track last week his old gyp wouldn't go on i said you better stop her he just let her go had a shock collar on her all he says is i shoulda but didn't i ain't hutin my young dog with her till he gets her fixed

what got my dad huntin hounds he hunted with an old man named jess mccallister they would kill foxs in the day time with old black dogs and coon and possum with the same dogs at night and never have a fox chase at night thanks tim
