Cod liver oil side effects to Kidneys?

I recently told my vet I have several of my hounds on Vitamin D. She recommended that I stop the supplement, because to much D in a dog will burn up there kidneys. I then clarified and told her that it is actually Cod Liver oil, and its a smaller amount of vitamin D.

So is my Vet correct? Should I discontinue my use of Cod liver oil, or is it small enough dosage I shouldn't have to worry about.

Thanks in advance.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium, which is why it is often found in dairy products for humans. The sun also provides Vitamin D through its rays. Too much Vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia, a condition that can make a dog's bones weak. Another side effect of Vitamin D is that an excess can cause the destruction of Vitamin E in a dog's body, which will shorten or destroy muscle fibers.

Other side effects of Vitamin D include nausea, diarrhea, dehydration, loss of appetite and general weakness. Vitamin D can also cause a dog's muscles to calcify, and can lead to an increase in urination.

Cod liver oil and other fish liver oils have been very popular for omega-3 fatty acids, and indeed they are rich in these fats. However, fish liver oils are very high in Vitamin D; dogs and cats have much lower requirements for Vitamin D than humans. Excessive quantities of Vitamin D in pets can result in abnormal calcium and phosphorus levels that can cause mineralization and calcification of vital tissue and organs. Urinary stones can also be promoted by calcium abnormalities. Therefore, fish body oils without Vitamin D are preferred for pets.

I have gave one cod liver oil pill to my dogs every day now for the past 16 years... I have never had an issue, just limit to one pill because you can give too much.
