Soft Mouth Dog

I KNOW I HAVE SEEN THIS TOPIC BEFORE BUT CAN'T FIND IT. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO FOR A DOG WITH A SOFT OR NOT SO LOUD MOUTH. I THINK IT WAS CAUSED FROM PREVIOUS OWNER LETTING HIM BARK ALL THE TIME. I WAS SURE I SAW A THREAD ON HERE ONCE THAT SAID GIVE THEM HONEY AND LEMON JUICE? I DON'T KNOW IF ANYTHING WILL WORK BUT, I WILL TRY ANYTHING. THIS DOG IS A TOP NOTCH BELLY RUBBING TREE DOG AND I JUST WISH I COULD HEAR HIM. ANY SUGGESTIONS OR A LINK TO WHERE I COULD GET INFO. WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS, DARREN

The best luck I've had is PREDISONE.
10 days 1 tablet each day.
5 days 1/2 tablet each day.
5 days 1/4 tablet each day.
Always do the complete treatment, even if their voice improves before you finish the 20 day treatment.
You usually can get it from a vet. It is a steroid, not very expensive.
I have had good luck with it.

Predizone as listed above & a good no bark collar , vet can also give you remidyl which is a good anti - inflamatory & antibiotics if an infection is present.
Lay dog up through entire treatment time on vocal rest. When treatment time is up ,take it one dump (not all night) see how it sounds if good take again later in week starting out slowly not over doing it. If dog was not back to normal on 1st dump I've seen them need 2 rounds of steriods....& vet can also check for scar tissue or polyps on vocal cords .

what size pill you talking about? I have seen 5mg-20mg

I have a young walker male that has a screaming bawl mouth on tree and I will guarantee that if he trees hard tonight he will choke it down some on the next night.

Been through this myself, tried everything nothing worked. I have always thought that the bark collar itself made the problem worse because he would check the collar and scream when it shocked him for a few min. The best advice I ever got was not to hear the other dogs in the cast. If your comp. hunt you should know every bark your dog makes. So you know when the dog is treed or trailing. Focus on every bark your dog makes. It takes pratice to zone in on yours and tune out the other dogs. I started by walking through the woods the whole time my dog was trailing till he got treed. As I was walking if I thought he was treed for sure I would stop and listen. Once you can tell for sure the dog is treed while walking get a buddy to hunt a dog with yours and do the same thing. Do not listen to your buddys dog just yours. It takes time but its worth it if the dog can get the job done. Once you get this down and are ready for the hunts be prepared to fight for your dog the whole hunt. If your getting 1st trees the cast will try to say your dog is deeper or split from theres. Get use to saying will see when we get in there. Mine always sounded way deeper because he choked down bad. I had to be careful because he would get split 50 yrds deeper if the other dogs pulled up short. Never commit to being split treed when dogs are treed close. Hope this helps

I use the 5mg. Seems to be all that is needed. My vet charges me about 10 cents a pill.

They say honey helps, or honey mixed with lemon juice. Its worth a shot, in my experience if it is going to work it will work by the end of the first week. Its quite possible his vocal cords have been damaged. This can come from excessive barking, or pulling on a lead. I'm unsure what the vet does to treat this. I believe steroids.

Regular exercise is the best for correcting excessive barking, generally this is a form of a hi energy dog, finding a way to vent its unused energy.
Having a fenced in area, or a treadmill, or hard hunting, is the best way to deal with this.
Bark collars will curb barking but do not solve the issue.

Is LA 200 something you can buy from tractor supply or have to come from vet ? My new pup barked about the first 3 days i had him i didn't want to get on to him very much since he was just getting used to me.He barked his mouth completely out but just kept on barking so i put my shock collar on him on low setting and got him to stop. Hasn't barked much at all in about a week an a half give him a bottle of honey but is still not near as loud as he was, can't tell if he is still hoarse or just not opening up all the way because he knows he is not supposed to bark. Could he have ruined his mouth in only about 3 days? He is in a kennel not on a chain so there is no pulling on his throat.

Go to vet and ask for predizone ...the La 200 is an antibiotic & will only help if there is infection present...most the time it's just inflamation /irritation of the vocal cords.
And as for long term damage the only way long term damage could happen in 3 days is if you leave it untreaded & don't put dog on vocal rest for a week or 2 if a dog who has lost his mouth continues to bark excessively scar tissue & or polyps can develope on vocal cords (would require a trip to specialized vet to have a hope @ fixing)...make sure you specify what you want @ vets office had one try & give me cough medicine one time (changed vets don't think they understood why I wanted my dog loud lol) Good Luck !
