What do most people look for or what would you rank as the most desired quality when looking at a young dog / older pup before they ever go to the woods?

I have two four month old pups. One is very high strung, active, and barks a lot. The other one seems to have a milder personality but I let them both look at a caged coon the other day and the milder one came unglued while the hyper pup didn't pay much attention. Both are houndy good looking pups.

I need to sell one but im just afraid ill let the better one go. What does everyone else look for when buying a pup?

I can't stand a dog that is crazy acting around the pen. I want one that's laid back and mellow. All the high strung dogs iv raised her never made a true coon treer for my needs

Brains , but also a thick enough skin to handle correction without turning into a puddle of mud ... if I don't see that in a young dog ... I aint even gonna get out in the woods and deal with em' .

The pups sire is Bowlings buck fork dollar. I only have the puppy papers at this time but I think I saw another buck fork dollar that is out of skuna river bark so maybe the same lines.

I'm no 20 year veteran or anything, but I prefer the one that shows the most interest. They seem to start faster in my opinion. I have 2 pups right now that are just opposite of what you described. The high strung one was going nuts on cage coon when she was young and the more laid back one didn't care for it to much. One is 7 months and the other is 7 1/2 months and the high strung one is treeing coon every night I take her out. The other is behind but progressing. I don't run my pups with old dogs I let them show me what they have inherited. I put a lot of time in these pups too. I'm a big believer in imprinting on pup. Time, training, and blood make a coondog.

To truely tell which ones the best you need to get them out of that pen...find a place to let them run loose or take them out to your hunting spots during the day see which one goes off exploring is bolder acting a has more smarts . You can take a pups @ night along little creeks just walk be hind them look for the samething . Turn some cage coon loose see witch one actually runs it & trees , first where they can see it . Increase the difficulty by turning it loose earlier in the woods or on a creek wait awhile then take pups to that spot see who does what. Here we are lucky that ours are able to run loose with our squirrel dogs & an old hound ,usually by about 5 mo we know which one is our keeper.It should be running and treeing by then At about 6 mo in the pen they go and start getting worked @ night. Just thier behavior on a couple cage coon isn't going to tell you enough. We do puppy & young dog training here but all my spots are currently full but spend everyday for years observing pups...

I'd pick the one that's quite in the kennel and will bark at the cage coon.Thats 2 +s in my book.Other than that its a shot in the dark.Goodluck with whichever you choose.

They will tell you both ways when you listen every one. I myself take the one that's laid back around the house. Only as that is to my liking. That by no means, should be taken as a good rule of thumb truth is, your taking a shot in the dark. Good Luck and good hunting

The good ones ... Bark in the pen as pups and are hard headed; or for me they do . Lol just had better luck with the wild ones that drive 90% of other hunters crazy. Once a dog has had 1-2 hard years under their belt the crazy kennel manners normally come to a halt .

I like them wound tight , but don't like them stupid ; the wound up pups can usually take pretty hard correction and are still mentally tough to go on the rest of the night; they have no quit ... Plus they usually have no quit and OBSESS over everything they do; and IMO when that obsession is harnessed towards what you want , you get unreal focus


But ... When it boils down to it , pick the pup that best fits your temperament as a trainer... I can deal with kennel barking as puppies and hyper in the kennel , but can't stand one that is filthy in the kennel

If they are out of buckfork dollar than both will turn out is the wild one a female and the laid back one a male? that's the way my whole litter s females wild males laid back! They will both make coon dogs if given the chance ! Call Herman bowling and go hunt with his pups that are all out of different females age ranging from7 months to 15 months old and see how they go all alone with no buckets !!! I got both of them from Herman and I too think they will both make but I have been afraid to try and start them both. I figured if I can put more time into one of them I might be better off. Do you think its a bad idea to try and start both? Meaning having them in the woods at the same time?

When they actually old enough to hunt usually not a good idea to take more than one pup @ a time ...you can alternate nights or dumps with them (bring your no bark collar for the one left in the box lol) Hunt alone or with an experienced hound that's not junky or the least bit ill . When you take them with other dogs make sure their big enough to keep up .

Start them both but one at a time when they start there won't be ready for hard hunting every night so that will give you some time to see both of there traits and qualities and see which one you like the best and the second will be worth a lot more $$$$$ if it started and treeing it's own coon!,,,!!!
