Don't know if it is legal or not. But have used it before, because I was running time on 2 different stopwatches and needed to run time on another dog.

I do, if anyone wants to see my phone I let them. Rule says:

"For handler/spectator use of phone or any electronic device used to relay personal message transmissions and/or any other use considered innapropriate or unnecesarry, during any part of the hunt with an exception to reasonable situations that are approved by the judge."

That's what is printed on the back of the card anyway, it might read differently in the advisor or actual rulebook.

Even though there is a wonderful app available to keep time on all four dogs as well as hunt time, etc. UKC decided that it was inappropriate and or unnecessary. I guess they would rather you fumble with 2 or 3 stopwatches. PKC didn't have a problem with it. If you go by the printed rules it should be allowed if the judge is ok with it but per the advisor it isn't allowed.

Mike it is like splitting hairs. I have agreed this at a hunt before. Because you can turn the voice and text off on the phone. So then can you use it?

I took an Itouch, which is just like an iPhone but no voice on it to a hunt and couldn't use the stop watch because they said I could call people. Lol so I asked them to please make a call on it.

Heard that a Non hunting judge was using his flip phone to keep time at finals in KY from someone... "Ok fellas he treed at 9:57, that tree is closed at 10:02".

If this is true, it sure is a shame!

I would think if you're holding it in your hand in front of the cast it should be plain to see if you're using it for anything else .

Cmon guys it's suppose to be about dogs, treeing coon etc... Not who is are who's not doing anything!! Jmo

Rule says:

"For handler/spectator use of phone or any electronic device used to relay personal message transmissions and/or any other use considered innapropriate or unnecesarry, during any part of the hunt with an exception to reasonable situations that are approved by the judge."

Keeping time should be a "reasonable situation" !!!!!!
The hunt timer app and the stopwatch on an iphone are great tools.
I wish others would pay as much attention to their own dog as they pay to try and scratch another handler. Are they really that worried about the dog on the end of their lead? Its sad.
There are also some great gps apps for the iphone that can keep you from getting lost or just let you know exactly where you are at so you can save a few steps, but I guess your not allowed to look at that either. Too many rules these days. Lets get back to focusing on letting the best dog win!!!

Coulda, shoulda. woulda. UKC says don't keep time with your cell. It's their game, their rules.

I understand that it is their game.
Let me rephrase
" with an exception to reasonable situations that are approved by the judge."

Keeping time IS a "reasonable situation"
Say you forget your stopwatch and nobody has one. Is it a "reasonable situation" then????????????

Its real simple UKC says no. If you are going to comp hunt get a stopwatch they are cheap. I have been judging cast for 25 years and have never had to use but 1 stopwatch. I don't understand needing your phone or multiple stopwatches?

Stop watch

I recently purchased a new stop watch for 27 dollars. I like it. ULTRAK 494.
It has a light up dislpay. Also a button lock, so it doesn't get started or stopped by accident. 2 hour countdown timer. Pretty easy to use too.
I don't see a problem with a cell phone being used as a stop watch, as long as Judge and cast agree. But sure wouldn't want
to get scratched or in trouble for it.
