full moon

just wanted to get some thoughts about guys running there hounds on a full moon. cuz every time i run on a full moon my hound seems to go a lil nutz. i was out 9-16-13 an my hound treed 800 yards from the truck but tapped three diff trees before he got the meat in the tree. so was wondering y the full moon makes hounds run like that. i no i cant be the only coonhunter that has a hound that runs like that. like i said its just on the full moon nights

I hunted last night. Made 3 trees , had 2 singles and 1 hedge mess tree with the moon up. The longest it took to get treed was 3 minutes. That was with female that just came out of heat.

I've seen some dogs act really weird on full moon nights and some dogs that don't care.I think it slows the coon activity down alot.Ive seen nights I couldn't buy a coon on a bright night an one night I treed 14 coons.Depends on the time of year and differant dogs I think.

I went last night to a corn field edge where coon are always out.Turned my Ike dog and we went 2 miles before getting treed and having a coon, even that was a rough track. The moon has definatley affected coon movement right at dark around my place.

Josh I would tend to believe it was the coon that was acting differently, and not the dog. In my opinion, the coons are a little .more particular as to what tree they climb on a moon lit night as they are aware that it may be harder to hide on that tree when the moon is shining full.

Now if the track is hot enough, and the hound is putting pressure on that rascal to climb, then the coon may not have the option to change its mind on which tree it wants to climb.

This is not absolute by any means, but it is how I interpret some moon light tracks while coonhunting

I havent hunted for 30 years but I have an opinion...

One of the reasons coon move at night, is because of the night cover, a full moon doesn't give them the cover they like. Therefore, they don't move as much and move differently than normal. Just like deer, they know when deer season is, due to smell I think, and their travel patterns change.

Also, I had one female that was a nice little coon dog (a hair trashy though) but she looked GREAT on full moon nights, specially if there were no leaves. I think that's because she could see them in the trees, she tree'd harder and was deadly accurate.

full moon

The moon controls the tides of the ocean...more crimes are commited on full moon nights, more babies born , more crazy accidents and all sorts of other things. My grandpa said fish bit better ...who knows but if all these things happen who's to say that a wild animal or even a dog isn't affected every now and then.

Full Moon

Biggest mystery in nature to me. The week of full moon I will still tree a few coons but generally work for them. Coon hunters say coons moving during day. Deer hunting is tough the same time and deer hunters say the deer are moving at night. I also trap. My catch rate that week is about one third of what it is the rest of the time. A trap will treat you the same at 2:00 in the afternoon as it will at 2:00 in the morning. This tells me the full moon does not entirely shut things down but it has a dramatic influence on game movements. I plan my vacation time around trapping and I will not turn in a request for time off without looking at a calendar to make sure that my vacation does not fall on this week. A overcast night or a light drizzle during this time game moves well though.
