Spraying kennels for fleas

What is everyone using to spray their kennels for fleas?

I've always kept Frontline Plus on my dogs and never had flea issues.. This year the fleas are BAD..

I made a spray the of Sevin Dust, Permethrin 10% and bleach. Sprayed the kennels down 2 weeks ago.. Didn't seem to work well.

Today I gave all the dogs a dishsoap bath and sprayed the kennel down with a BioSpot kennel spray for fleas- gave them a Capstar (they are not due for more topical flea treatment for a week) and this evening still found a few fleas.

I've ordered the Bayer Seresto flea collars for the dogs since the Frontline hasn't seemed to work.. I should have them early next week and we are going to give that a go..

Is there something better to spray the kennels down with? They are partial dirt-partial gravel.. I stripped everything out of their houses today and put new bedding in.. After I sprayed everything I sprinkled Diatomaceous Earth Powder on the ground and in their houses..

I'm running out of ideas...

Melanie you need to get you some MARTINS I.G. REGULATOR or another similar product to break the hatching cycle . I just use the martins mixed with permethrin 10% when I spray . the martins is an insect growth regulator that sterilizes the newly hatched fleas and doesn't let them reach the biting and egg laying stage thus breaking the hatching cycle . once you do this they are easy to keep under control . these two products are all I use in my kennels .

You are going to love the Seresto collars. Work wonders for fleas, but can't hardly beat it for ticks. I was using frontline, then advantix monthly with the preventic collars for ticks, this surpasses all I have used. I have my dogs in the woods year round. If they are as bad as you say in the environment, fogging the kennels with a flea fogger may work, but dogs obviously have to be out for awhile after flea bombs go off. You will like Seresto collars. Good luck.

comfortis

I used frontline for years with good results. Last year had fleas realy bad. I heard about comfortis and tryed it. Give pills to dog and with in 30 minutes dead fleas were falling off dogs. With in 2 days no fleas on dogs or around kennel. I give pills to all dogs every 2 months and have no fleas. Never spray kennel or yard. Get them at my vet they are expensive but worth every penny.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm going to try the Martin's with the Permethrin and hopefully that will knock them down.

Casey- Glad to hear someone is having good results with those collars! The reviews I've seen have been good, but there are not a lot of them yet. I bought them through Dr Foster & Smith and I can get $20 rebates on 2 of the 3 of them.

I'm going to switch the 2 house dogs to comfortis I think. When I'm at work they are kenneled next to the hounds and I haven't been thrilled with the topical flea treatment on them. I've been thinking about it for a while. If they work that well I may just switch the hounds over. I'll spend the money if it works....

Comfortis all the way! Just remember do NOT give anything with ivermectin in it within 2 weeks of giving Comfortis. It can cause anything from neurological problems to death. Triflexis also has spinosad (active ingredient in Comfortis) and a heartworm ingredient.

Comfortis does work great. Girlfriend uses it on all three of her dogs, it just doesn't do anything for ticks. She started adding Advantix to her arsenal this summer after taking her dogs out to the woods with us. The Seresto collar kill fleas that are on the dog, and kills any additional fleas that jump on before they can bite. Dogs are allergic to the saliva of the flea bite, so good prevention needs to kill them quickly. The seresto collar kills ticks before they attach. And you can't beat the 8 months of protection for the price!

Almost learned this the hard way. Gave them both the same day and it caused neurological problems within minutes. The dog made it with a lesson learned for me.

Well I'm about a month into the Seresto collars and I love them so far.

No fleas for the hounds. I'm still going out every two weeks and spraying down the kennels and every week putting down Diatomaceous Earth Powder. It seems to be working great.

When I first put on the collars, in about 12 hours I could only find one or two fleas and in 24 none. In the month they have had them on I think I have found about 2 fleas between the 3 dogs.. Now we will see how long the collars last, but if I get 4 to 6 months out of them I'll be thrilled.

If your collars don't do the trick go to vet & get comfortis pills...~ buy the one for up to 120 lbs & cut it in half so 1 last 2 mo. fleas on dog will die within an hour , within 24 hrs none ,new ones from kennel that jump on dog the same... breaks the flea life cycle
