If you have a bad outbreak I would dip or bathe them first. Then put any of the commonly available drops on their shoulder blades monthly.
If there is no outbreak yet, or it is very minimal, just go with drops or comfortis or one of those collars. I like the drops myself.

Soap the dog up with DAWN dishwashing liquid and leave it on about 5 minutes. The soap bubbles cover the fleas gills and smothers them. An old Cajun man from Picayune, Mississippi taught me that old trick and it works. You will rinse off dead fleas.

this is what we do with our pups a few times before well sale them , I cant stand to see a pup or older dog ate up with fleas . old dogs I buy a spray at trac supply with citronella in it and spray them ounce a week and seems to do fine , also put and keep cedar chips in dog house and around kennel , I never hardly ever see fleas or ticks on my hounds .

cedar is good for fleas, but the oils can cause an allergic reaction on the dog. comfortis can get expensive depending on how many dogs you have to treat. some vets are cheaper than others on it and there are places online that you can order it from UK, Aus, etc. for a lot cheaper.

My dogs currently have them on. I had a very bad flea infestation this year and nothing was working. I was spraying down kennels every week and dogs all had Frontline on. You could flip a dog over and watch those nasty little things scatter. I bought all 3 hounds Seresto collars. I sprayed the kennels down again, changed their bedding and put those collars on. Within 12 hours I was only able to find a couple fleas, in 24 hours no fleas. I don't know if they will last the full 8 months but after what I went thru trying to get rid of the fleas, I'd be happy with 4 or 5 months. They have had them 1 month now and absolutely no fleas on them.

Seresto collar....put it on and forget about it. Very safe, and for the price, I am not sure you can beat it. I am curious also to see if it lasts the eight months, my dogs are swimming quite a bit so I think five months can be expected.

Melanie....glad it worked well for you.

FYI Comfortis has not been tested on breeding animals. I would not give it to a dog or bitch I planned to use for breeding.

I have corgis and 2 spayed pet yorkies. The yorkies - who spend almost all of their time in the house - have gotten fleas something awful this summer. Frontline isn't touching it. I've heard the fleas are becoming resistant. Meanwhile, the corgis haven't has a problem at all.

Hate fleas.

here are the active ingredients to the common flea meds (all have inactive ones). You can get some of the yard bug, grub worm liquid that has the Imidacloprid as the the ingredient and it will for fleas as well. I have used it by putting it on a rag and rubbing the dog on belly and under legs and also putting it in a spray bottle. never had any adverse effects.

I mainly use the Comfortis pill myself. no issues there and have had a litter w/o any issues with bitch on the pill as well.

there is also the Diatomatious Earth. It is an all natural product that can be put on dog, pen, bedding, etc. It kills the fleas by getting into their exoskeleton and drying them out and they die. It doesnt work as quickly as some other products esp if you have a bad outbreak.

no matter what you use, do the research first. every one one of these has side effects and its up to you to make the choice what is best for your animals.

Advantage:
Imidacloprid
Pyriproxyfen

Advantix:
Imidacloprid
Permethrin
Pyriproxyfen

Frontline has:
fipronil
(S)-methoprene

Capstar (tablet) give daily or as needed for infestations:
Nitenpyram

Sentinel:
milbemycin oxime
lufenuron

Comfortis:
spinosad

reference to safety in breeding bitches. this was done with a much greater dosage than 1 pill a month:

In a reproductive safety study, COMFORTIS chewable tablets were administered orally to female Beagles at 1.3
and 4.4 times the maximum recommended therapeutic dose every 28 days prior to mating, during gestation, and
during a six-week lactation period. No treatment-related adverse effects were noted for conception rates in the
dams, or for mortality, body temperature, necropsy, or histopathology findings for the dams or puppies. One dam
from each treatment group experienced early pregnancy loss and one additional high dose dam aborted late term.
The treated dams experienced more vomiting, especially at one hour post-dose, than the control dams. Puppies
from dams treated at 1.3 times the maximum recommended therapeutic dose had lower body weights thanpuppies from control dams. Although puppy mortality between treated and control dams was not different, the
puppies from the treated dams experienced more lethargy (4.4X group only), dehydration, weakness and felt coldto the touch (4.4X group only) than puppies from control dams.
