My young dog, just turned one year old this month, started treeing at about seven months with his mother and then by himself. Problem is now he gnaws the tree some. I believe it's a problem that will get worse with age. I been coon hunting a long time, and for some reason never had this problem before. Does anyone out there have any advice for this old fella as to how and correct this fault before it gets worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have never had one that did it a lot. My current dog will marks up a tree a little, but usually it is if I let him stay at the tree a long time while I make my way in to him. For him it seems to be a boredom thing while he waits on my slow butt! As I said, don't happen a bunch but that is when it does happen for me.

Have you shot a lot of coon out to him yet? Could it just be excitement for the reward he is anticipating? I mean if I got one that chewed some as a result of over stimulation and the anticipation of getting a coon in his mouth, that is better then the one who slicks as a result of getting too many shot down...



I dunno man, I am as lost as last year's Easter Eggs on this one, anyhow, that's all I got.

dogs will chew more when its hot out. I dont know how u get them to stop chewing on the tree, i just think its an inherent trait.

I haven't shot but a couple out to him, but am hunting a new lease where there is a lot of cutover and what we call tai tai thickets. I have to use a machete quite a lot, and me being 61 it takes a while to get to him most of the time. I believe you have something about the waiting and boredom. Thanks, I appreciate it. Also, we are experiencing the worst heat of the summer since the rain has subsided some. Thanks to Zack too.

Check his ears. Sometimes a dog with ear problems will start to chew.

Some times there is nothing you can do it is just in the genetics. Do a little research an see if it is in the line of dog you have. I have ran into it a few times now.

Some of them chew.....no big deal, unless they start to prefer chewing to barking.

One thing about the chewers, they hardly ever leave a tree.

I appreciate all the info from you fellows. Any advice is helpful. I wish there had been computers and forums when I was growing up. Sharing information through this kind of media is great. Once President Reagen was asked by a young reporter what his generation did before the age of computers. President Reagen replied " We were busy inventing them."
