I like a honest strike dog but theres times i wish mine were automatic. I get tired of taking 2nd or 3rd. If you have an honest strike dog it better get by itself and have the coon or you wont win.

What is an Honest strike dog??

Is that a dog that doesn't open until he has the track moving in the right direction??

Is That a dog that doesn't open till he puts his nose on the ground very near where the coon was walking before he open??

Is that a dog that opens as soon as he smells coon scent, no matter if it is from a rig vehicle or from 100 yards from the woods you want to turn them in??

I am wondering if some folks know the difference between a dog that strikes in the wind and a dog that rattles off the lead strap.

What is a babbler??

Is that a hound that comes off the strap giving mouth when no track is evident?? (UKC's definition)

Is that a dog that is pulling into the wind and comes off the strap giving mouth, heading straight to the area where the actual coon track is?? and then taking the track immediately one direction?

Is that a hound that is pulling with his head up and tonging before you cut them, then opening a half dozen times after released going on a dead run to an area where the coon track is, then shutting up till they figure out which direction the coon actually went??

Is that a dog that comes open as soon as you get them out of the truck and don't shut up till you put them back in the box??

I have seen all these type hounds, and read alot about so many babblers, but not sure I fully understand the coonhunters version of what a babbler is. Now I'm still a little green to this coon hunting thing as I only been doing it 45 to 50 years so help me out here fellow hunters.

to me an honest strike dog doesn't open until it smells coon however that may be and a babbler opens just to hear his head rattle and when they open on track they should run or work it out from that point on

Its easy to identify the honest strike dog, hes the one that consistently strikes for a quarter and trees for 125.
Its harder to describe the babbler as it requires the use of profanity.

i dont neccesarily agree totally with that. not quoting anyone but from alot of what i have read on this site most think a dog barking on lead or within the first minute are babblers. its hard for me to believe that most havent had a dog strike on lead and cut loose and not hear another bark for a minute or two until he gets in there and hits the track. striking doesnt mean just a track, they can and do strike on air scent. most of us can actually tell babbling from an honest strike, so to say that an honest strike consistently gets you in for 25 is far from being correct. that sounds like a tight mouth trailer and a split tree artist or tight mouth trailer who can out hustle the other 3 to the tree, lol. but hey he is consistently accurate though.

I feel confident everyone knows what a babbler is, some may want to play dumb but trust me they know. What you're talking about can and does happen but come on now. Anyone that owns a dog that starts barking every time you turn it loose as soon as you turn it loose is a babbler plain and simple he's not winding a coon he's babbling that's all. It's easy to tell the difference from a dog just babbling and when he actually hits a track and is running a coon if you pay attention.

Im like y'all we all know what a babbler is BUT difference in that I don't think folks know the difference in a honest strike dog or a semi tight mouthed dog that's always struck for 25. Runs 20 to a hundred yards and gets treed

Well said GA DAWG. Not many know what an honest strike dog is these days. But if you been hunting long enough you KNOW what a babbler or automatic strike dog is.....Problem is many will tolerate babbling as well as slick treeing.

I don't know which would be worse. I HATE walking to slick trees but I'd go insane with a babbler I'm sure. I'll never own either on at least not for long.

Lotsa hunters dont have a clue, they think they know when someone elses dog is babbling but are in denial about their own.

Hunted one night with a guy with a young bluetick, this guy was proud of haveing a real strike dog, i hunted my old rat dog who is pretty tight on track. The night went about like i expected, the little blue female had 3 first strikes and i had 3 first trees plus my dog had one coon alone. In this guys mind his dog did all the work and my hitchhiker stole those trees. When i showed him on the garmin that my dog had run everyone of those tracks ahead the whole way he was sure that garmins are just untrustworthy junk. His quick strike dog was just a dogtracker. Lotsa guys dont have a clue.

I'm a little confused with this post. Are you saying his dog opened on the track and your dog treed the same coon but didn't open until after his did being its more tight mouthed but a fast track dog? The reason I'm asking is because from reading the post it almost sounds like he has a boohoo stand on its head, loose mouthed track dog not a babbler.

If you ever draw one like this you will understand, they dont babble off the lead , they open when they loose track of the other dog or dogs and then run opening on the other dogs track. Its hard to minus them in a cast , they are runnin a track but its the track left by the other dogs. DOGTRACKIN.
Some pups pick up the habit trying to keep up with faster dogs.

Young dog was following Jon's dog most of the night and being young was probably loose mouthed and easily excited, it does appear Jon's old dog was tighter on track

Yep I got you now. I always called them me too dogs bc when they lose the track or it gets too tough they run to and then with the better dog and let them do all the work while they just tag along. I blame this problem on people running young dogs with older dogs and then letting them chew on the coon even though they did little or no work to tree it.

The few babblers I've hunted with will just start barking for no reason as soon as they're cast out either alone or with company. They just bark while they're running looking for a track. Once they do hit a track there's a noticeable difference in their bark and the ones I've seen can and do tree their own coon.

The one owner told me he wants a dog to open immediately when he cuts it loose whether its on deer, fox, coon or just barking for no reason as long as it falls on a coon and gets treed. He is or at least was big into comp hunts which he won more than his fair share of hunts but man he was NO fun to pleasure hunt with.
