I like to be able to hunt the next night too. We very seldom kill coon.

Do you eat them?

If I lived in the land of many coon. Id kill em to but I don't. Some farmers will tell you flat out to kill every one you see. Most I've ever killed in a night is probably 5. We had a limit of one a night per party for a long time. Then it went to 1 per person. Now last yr or yr before it went to 3 a night.

Lots of coon, and lots of coonhunters and trappers around here.

Several 100+ coon per season hunters, even a couple 200+.

Several more 100+ trappers and many of those 200+ and a few 300-400+.

Kill 'em all or they will be in someone else's tree or trap tomorrow.

I might have killed 20 coon all last season but I doubt it. Kill that many where I hunt and you will have nothing left to tree.

We killed 36 at White River refuge one night. It is covered up in coon and the south unit is only open 15 days out of the year. I deer hunted the south unit several years ago and counted 86 coons in the day time over a three day period. Around the house we shoot some and leave some setting up. We have plenty of coons and not very many hunters.

Killed 28 back in 1993 with my dad and brother and our 3 hounds. All singles except one tree that hand 7 great big ones in it. Landowner orders said all coon hafta die, so they did.

A couple of years ago we had Joe Newlin and his dog Thorn up here in mid winter, I had my young dog at the time Jester with him, and my Brothers English dog, we killed 21. There were 12 split trees. Thorn had 9 splits by himself, Bozo had 2 and Jester had one. The 9 other times 2 of three dogs were hooked together.

A fun couple of nights.

Me and a buddy killed 33 in one day with terriers and hounds in an gigantic abandoned egg operation. There where eight buildings all 40 foot wide and 600 feet long. We kept the hounds downstairs and out the terriers in the attic. One of us was in the attic while the other was on the ground inside the building. The coons would run and get down in the soffit and the when the terriers or the hounds would locate a coon we would both head to them. Along all the walls were they meet the ceilings where panels that opened for ventilation which exposed the soffit where the coon where hiding. They either came down to the hounds ir ran out to the terriers. We averaged $19 skinned on that bunch. Just noticed the other day that the owners of it burned the buildings down. Made me sad those buildings where never as good as they where that first day but we would get between 15-20 coon a year out of them. Gonna miss that sure money this year.

Yeah we don't have many nights like those anymore. On an average night of hunting, most of the night, we'll average 8-14 now a days.

That is actually pretty accurate. After the first couple weeks of season when you are up to 60-80 coon the dog starts giving that "oh crap, he's gonna shoot another one" look. They hardly wool them, just sniff and move on.....
