cur guys need info!

first omcba dog for me. seems she misses every time she opens a track and trees. if she don't open and not standing on tree squirrel will be found. question is breaking her off tracks or just live with it.

Just got her

Only had her a few weeks. She does tree me some just not liking all the dens or empty trees. Didn't know if it was a fault I can fix. Never buy one again with out a trial.

Sorry to hear your luck. It sounds like someone dumped their cull on you.
Go back to who you bought her from and ask for your money back.
Either way post their name so others can see if they are honest or not.

If the dog has been standing for a while it may take her some time to improve..Not really enough info to make an accurate assessment..I wouldn't call anyone out just yet..

A 4 year old dog is what it is and the seller should stand behind it. Ive seen and heard of too many bad deals like this and I believe open feedback on sellers is a good thing. Not every dog will suit every hunter but the seller should be held to account for their word good or bad.

Seems like a weird thing and maybe no merit in it but is she digging her ears or shaking her head? My female just seems to act weird when her ears bother her. I learned to keep them looked after better and she is right back to being a good dog. Really don't know if it is coincidence or not and I can't relate what ears have to do with treeing but I have heard someone give this advice before and it really SEEMED to help. I use an over the counter cleaner but I remember a man with a kennel full of beagles who used to use a squirtbottle filled with hydrogen peroxide. Squirt it in rub its ears good and repeat. Do it a couple days or several times a day if you see the dog shaking it's head or digging its ears. I know I am gonna catch some flack for this post but hey maybe coincidence and I admit that but my dog is back to normal. One thing it ain't gonna hurt her to clean her ears less maybe you spray the peroxide in her eyes.

Used to work with a guy who wasn't very good at fixing his line and would mess with stuff that had nothing to do with the problem when I asked him what the heck he was doing he said, "Furl after a while you got to try something. I call them desperation moves." lol.

Sounds to me like your dog has more nose than you want. How can you fault a dog for treeing in dens ? And how can you be sure a squirrel tree is slick?

Colder nose dogs will make trees that the squirrel has already timbered away from. This time of year you'll get quite a bit of that. Even the hotter nose dogs will make more empty trees when the leaves are on. Squirrels don't hold well at all when they have cover to hide their escape. Let the leaves come off right and you might see a different dog. The fact that she's opening on tracks where no squirrels are found tells me she's probably cold trailing.

Many cur dogs need a good adjustment period before they get right with a new owner. Although she's hunting and making trees, there stands a good chance she's not performing to her maximum potential. Hope all turns out well....Clint

You get good days and bad days. If the squirrel are out feeding you are more likely to find one away from the den. If they aren't very active they will stay near the den. On a bad day you could get more squirrel by just sitting in a spot with the .22. On a good day you will remember why you like these curs so much. I know down south they have more squirrels than here. I get a lot of dens but I have learned to always believe my dog. I have spent a lot of time looking at some trees thinking she was crazy and bout ready to tell her it was in a hole go get another one and the squirrel decided to timber out.

Look at what tree she is treeing in. Check out any tree nearby that it is possible the squirrel could have timbered to. If the wind is blowing look at your dogs treed position in relationship to the wind and if it isn't in the tree the dog is on look upwind. Always look for a dark spot, a spot out of the ordinary, or the thickest part of the tree but don't overlook any part of the tree because they can be way out on the end of a twig. I like a little wind and what I look for then is the tail fur blowing.

Getting ready to head out now. Yesterday evening I didn't have any luck. Tried my luck on coon for the first time and no luck there either. She don't even know what a coon is yet and she is about 7. Squirrel dogs aren't for everyone but if you have a good day or a good dog you will likely be hooked if you are the type of person who enjoys walking in the woods.

Momma wants a batch of squirrel to fry and I would like to get a few more but you never know what any day will bring. One thing is in the evening around here the sun makes it hard to find a squirrel. The sun has a lot to do with me finding them because I only have vision in one eye. Too much sun blinds me. Not enough and I have some trouble also. Guess I am like that dog you hear about. The one they call Lucky.

when your dog just falls treed i would say that the dog is winding the squirrel in the tree and not tracking it up,that might be why hes not standing on the tree, hes standing back were he can smell the squirrel.when hes on the tree hes smelling were the squirrel went up at.i dont know any way to break a dog from barking on track, its bred in them to be silent or to open on track just like its bred into dogs to bark up a tree.

slick treeing

If shes treeing early in the mornings and opening on the tracks it may be cold coon tracks shes treeing on and a lot of great squirrel dogs will stand back off the tree and they will watch the squirrel and move with the squirrel as it moves. That is more than likely why you see it when shes off the tree and as long as she is under the shade of the tree branches you would be fine in the hunts as long as shes showing treed. Hope this helps you out a little

After some hard hunting

I've hunted her in morning and evening for the past week and I've noticed on several times when she's open on ground she is looking at it on ground at barking at a dead run. And most of them have been in a hole on her seen with my own eyes squirrel going in and she's treed straight up. But with that being said I've shot out 12 left a few small ones for seed. But have 12 planed for our family to fry up for supper tomorrow. Yum. Real fun female to own.
