What should I do?

Hey fellas. I've got a four month old pup out of track lizard, a dog that came from the Trackman/lot lizard cross. He's big and houndy and tears up a hide. Got a guy that says I should start hunting him with some older dogs around. I don't want to. I want to wait till its cooler, the leaves are off, and he's about eight months old. What do y'all think? I've never trained one from a pup. I read about all these young dogs that are doing it, but heck, he's still a clumsy pup! His sire lizard, is full brother to the rough mountain joe dog. His dam is a pr female out of stylish duke, an old arkansas state youth champion, that hunts hard. No quit. Any tips on what to do with a pup of these bloodlines? What to expect? He's real smart. Learns quick. Thanks guys.

What time

Dogs learn from birth. It's never to early to start one. Get the book called water dog it's about retrievers but a dog is a dog the more you handle and work them the better and smarter they get. Just my opinion on training dogs.

Let him be a pup ! I would not rush it , wait till he's at least 8 months , then start with a trainer coon . JMO . Get the book Walk with Wick .

age?

it yours do what you want to. Fourteen weeks old a dogs mental capacity is there. they can at that age learn all commands. sit stay heel etc. physically not mature though. Start slow with them I let mine follow me in the woods wen I fill up buckets. I let my daughter drag a coon hide around and play "'tug of war''. 5-10 minutes a day every day. dogs learn from repetition I have yet to see one learn anything sitting in a pen or on a chain.
