When to start training?

I have a 4 1/2 month old male walker pup that i just introduced to his first cage coon. He seemed very excited and did not want to leave it alone. Ive never trained a hound before, any tips on how too? When should i start running him with a older more experienced hound?

I'm a little surprised that I didn't get any response with all the hunters on here!

it's been answered many times lol . at 4 1/2 months is a good time to start the pups training on things like sit , stay , load up ect. getting a good handle on the pup . other than that a walk thru the woods as many times as you can just to get the pup woods wise . maybe a coon hide drag or two . but until you think the pup can cross creeks and handle the woods and KEEP UP with the big dogs I wouldn't throw it down with one . at the age your pup is you have plenty of work at the other things and by the time the weather gets right it should be old enough for a hunt with the older dogs , if that's how you want to train it .

I agree with Robert on the most part. A dog that handles well is very important and should be the first thing you must do. But when its ready I think you should let it do the work alone. Yes you'll have a headache sometimes, but you'll have a independent dog not a me to dog. If it cant handle a track to well and the older dogs are trailing out a young dog can give up what its doing and pull off and fall in with the others. Yeah he'll be at the tree but didn't do the work. I'm not saying not to take it out with other dogs but I think you'll make a better dog in the end if he starts out doing it alone. If you're planning on comp hunting you will understand what I mean when its time.

when to start training

They are right do you ground work first leading, training to come & mind ...few cage coon you can turn a few loose that he can see & turn him loose on them then progress on to turning him on ones let out earlier...about 6 months start turning him out @ night along creeks walking behind, before you no it he'll be going all the way. When their not big enough to keep up many just babble and run your other dogs. When you do start hunting him with other dogs make sure they are staight & not the least bit mean .Good Luck!
