I would think if you can AI the female with fresh semen from both males at the same time you could get an even amount of pups from each sire... But one male might have some stronger contenders.
It costs more to register the litter and you have to DNA all the pups ($40 a pup) but if you can get people to put a down payment, it wouldnt come straight out of your pocket, but yet you can't book pups out of ___ male until you know how many you have out of each male.
It all depends on if it worth it to you, cuz you can make two crosses at the same time and save your female some work and down time.

Dual Sired Litter

Dirtdevil I've never heard of this. So your injecting semen from TWO males,at the same time, in order to have ONE litter, with pups off BOTH males?

Could you please explain further and what cross has been done like this and maybe some of the pros and cons of it. Thanks.

I've only recently heard of em' doing it with semen from two males at the same time ...

Most gyps with a good number of eggs drop em' in batches , not all at once ... so you can fertilize a batch at a time from different studs .

It's common to do it in the registries now , gotta get a different litter enrollment and dna all the pups ...

I just haven't seen the actual numbers on how often people pull it off versus all the pups ending up from just one stud.

The only negative I have found is when I thought I would be able to permanately register each pup @ time of litter application, as u can with a single sire litter.
I was informed that that option does not xist on a "dual sire litter".
Discount DNA kits R available for purchase at the larger events (AO) etc.
Also if u decide to have them DNA'ed spend the xtra $4.00 per check swab. In other words I sent duplucate swabs, just incase 1 was insufficient, they got an xtra to use.
Also to lessen the financial stress I purchased my DNA kits over a period of 10 mths as opposed to all at once, knowing that I was going to need them within a yr.
A word to the wise........
U will have to speak w/ukc personal at sumtime,I have found that not all their personall r equally knowledgeable on the subjuct of a "dual sire" litter so be prepared for sum aggrevation,by individuals who u think should know but don't. It was a learning xperiance for me ,if u stay the course it can and has been done.
P.S. if UKC feeds u a line of info. that just doesn't sound proper investigate it,ask ?, ask ?, ask? !!!

Got mine done w/little aggrevation.
It is xpensive!

it can be done either AI or natural breeding. you do have to have all involved dna tested to figure out which pups are off which sire. I can see doing this if you are planning on keeping a pup or two off each sire but not if you plan on just selling them all. If your hunting your female a lot there could always be an accident and she dosent make it to be bred again or an old female you want to breed 1 last time. Good Luck. I dont see any issue with it as long as you do it right but some people will blast you for it.

DNA all pups, both Sires and the Dam

DNA all pups, both Sires and the Dam. That would cover everything.
A good reason to do a dual sire litter would be: If one Sire is suspected of not always getting pups. This way you would get pups and not have to wait until the next heat cycle.

I have done it..and it's not as complicated as it sounds. A little pre planning will take the confusion out of it. Live covered a female with two different males...DNA all around and you get the correct pup papers for all of the pups!

Don't be afraid of it at all!

I think it would almost be cheaper in the long run. If your sires were ss you got to DNA the pups anyway and if you have ever tried to sell pups it would be a lot easer to get rid of 3 from each sire vs 6 or 8 from one sire. Your gonna have to pay for both litters anyway so why wait 6more months. I kinda like the idea.

Thank fellas ... Joe , how did you figure when to breed the different males and how was your litter split ?

I'm aware of the dna stuff , and not worried about that or cost ... I'll keep the litter and thin down to just the best pup or two so that part isn't an issue ... and even which sire won't matter to me because I'm just looking for the best pup that rises to the top.

I bred her to one side in the morning, and then the other in the afternoon. Litter was half out of one side and half out of the other.

Did it a few years ago. Bred 1st male in the evening of day 11. Bred 1st male again morning of day 12. Bred 2nd male evening of day 12 and morning of day 13. Had 1 pup out of the 1st male and 6 pups out of the 2nd. Bought all my dna kits at autom oaks and saved a bit. Wasnt too hard. Worst part was coming up with a name number system to keep track of which pups went with each dna test. Was a little costly but was a very neet experiance and lotsa fun playing guessing games with everybody while we were waitn on the dna results. Glad I did it.

This was done with OMC cur dogs a few years back. Bred to two males then DNA'd the pups. I think it was a chore to get the pups registered but the guy that did it is pretty persuasive to say the least. Pretty sure his intent was to see results from two different males he wanted pups out of from his female in half the time it would take going the normal route.

......That was exactly the purpose, but regrettably, my fellow OMCBA BOD members, while allowing those 10 pups to eventually be registered, voted unanimously as I recall not to allow this practice again in the future.......

If I remember correctly Danny Glista bred a female to Jet 8 and Gauge (son of jet8) and there was a pup or two that they couldn't identify who the sire was

When I did it was with blueticks. Totaly intentional. Never had any problems regestering. Did dna on all parents and puppys and sent it in. They sent back dna results on each of them and the puppy papers for each pup with proper parentage on it.

Justin, Mike Harrell did it probably 10 years ago with Harrels Anne. Like mentioned you have to DNA all pups to see what stud each one is out of but its not that big of a problem.
