New to coonhunting

A cousin of mine gave my husband and I a UKC Black and Tan and a UKC Redbone, both PR. I've always loved the sound of hounds at night but I really have no idea what I'm doing. My husband knows and would always hunt with his cousins dogs. I get the terms (chopping, gyps, etc.), I just don't guess i understand the hunting commands. My husband tries to help but he's not good at explaining. What are some good resources for me to look at? I want to get into coonhunting as much as him but it seems like everyone takes for granted that I've gone hunting and know the basics. I'm clueless here.

I'd say the best resources if your wanting to know more about the training aspect of it would be to buy and read the walk with wick books. If your wanting general info you can read the forums here and on other sites or get a subscription to bloodlines or prohound magazines and read the articles and you will start picking up on some but the best way is get in the woods and learn your dogs and if u don't know what someone is talking about as far as the hunting goes just ask. My wife had never been coon hunting until she had met me. It took her a while to understand too but she figured it out. Hope this helps

Read everything you can about coonhunting.I like the Walk With Wick books..You will learn more from just reading them than most guys learn in a lifetime hunting coonhounds...

Coonhounds

There are many short paper back books on training the Coonhounds . If you go to most library's they will have or can get a book on how to train a hound . Basic's will get one going . Also remember you can get started dogs dirt cheap people loose interest and don't want to feed them any more .

id say if you want to learn the basics just get you a copy of walk with wick, he explains things in pretty simple terms for a beginner , get you a copy of where the red fern grows and watch and you will appreciate the love for the hounds more . reading up helps . the biggest thing is get your dogs in the woods and get them used to being out in the open air with all the other critters especially if they are pups . Good luck

Thanks for the advice. The dogs are already trained. I wasn't sure if the Wick books would explain things or just teach training methods.

Also, we have Where the Red Fern Grows (1&2). I'll have to watch it again to see if it helps any.

the way the books written, it answers questions that hunters have about their hounds and how to correct faults and answers questions about why hounds do some of the things they do, I don’t agree with every signal point he makes but hey who am I to question a man whose made millions giving advice about coon dogs , hes smarter than me
Good luck !

When you say trained what exactly do you mean? That will help in what you need to know.

Go under hunting programs click on coonhounds coonhound events click on upcoming events scroll down to your state and find a club holding an event close to your home. Call or go there and meet some wonderful people who should help you.

best thing to do is find an "older hunter", not some 20 yr old newbie to hunt with you and your hounds once in a few. might be hard but find one that you trust and isknown to be a good houndsmen. what id do

My husband is gone until October at a police academy. So I'm kinda on my own until then. To add to the "where the red fern grows" comment, our redbone is Dan and the b&t is Ann. The movie never really showed me anything. The kid knew, or at least had an idea of, what he was doing. I don't or I'm not giving myself enough credit. All I could do tonight by myself is let the dogs out and hope I found them. I wouldn't know the difference in their barks, which is something to learn with each dog anyway. There's somewhat of a long story of how we got them, I know they will hunt and tree coons but idk what commands they are used to.

I recently got in contact with an "older" guy I used to work with. I forgot he hunts and he is relatively close to where we are now. He doesn't have any hunts planned until aug 2nd. July 20 there is a Nite Hunt near us. Never been to one so could I go just to spectate?
