Rabies!

Just had a coon about a mile up the rd test positive. Yall make sure you have your dogs shots up to date. I hope they got him before he spread it much.

Idk how true it is but my old vet said only about 1 out of 10 rabies shot actually take, meaning the other 9 are still susceptible to rabies if bitten. I hope it isn't wide spread. Doesnt your area already have a fairly low coon population? Rabies could just cripple it.

They are thin. Im hoping that's the saving point of it. This is the closest one I've known of near me. I've also heard every coon carries rabies dormant in them. How true I don't know. I know a guy his dog caught a rabid coon and didn't have his rabies shot. The man had to take the shots. The dog never got sick!! Was quarantined for like 3 months.

Well be careful and whatever you do make sure you don't get bit. I doubt those shots are much fun. I don't think I've ever seen a rabid coon. I saw one staggering all over the road one night but a guy told me that road is loaded with wild grapes and the coon was drunk from them lol who knows it might have been the guy that told me that was drunk!

Sorry to hear about the rabid coon.

When rabies first came through here years ago the coon fared much better in the areas where the population was real thin.

Not all coon carry rabies, it can lie dormant in them for months before killing the coon but usually is fairly quick.

If only 1 0f 10m shots take affect then you would see dogs slaughtered to prevent the spread of rabies. After the second shot most dogs are safe for the rest of their lives. They make you vaccinate every three years just to be safe.

I vaccinate every year for rabies in my coondogs. By law every 3 years after 1 yr. of age is the standard. I buy the 10ml bottle at the farmer store and give my own in between.

Last year my brother was bitten by a rabid fox about 1/4 mile from my place and nothing came up postive that I know of since then. Most animals that get it, die and no one ever knows it existed.

Plus, now they give the preventative shots to humans in the butt and around the wound. My poor brother couldn't sit on the way home from the hospital because he had gotten 10 shots in the butt. I really pitied him.

GA DAWG, in Sep 2012 Georgia released the 2011 rabies data and was ranked 5th in the nation for confirmed animal rabies. Coons were the highest majority of the animals confirmed.

340 confirmed cases.

Cat 22
Dog 12
Raccoon 189

Rabies

You have to watch out how they confirm their cases. I know for a fact that most state agencies and the CDC report each case where the animal is not caught as a confirmed case. In my book, a confirmed case should only be from the brain of a dead animal.

On the efficiency of rabies shots, they work fine. In fact, titer records show that we give rabies shot way more than is actually necessary. There has even been a push to lessen the frequency of shots more than 3 years apart.

A titer test is a test that confirms the efficiency of any shot over time.

This one once dead was taken to our local vet and head sent wherever they send em. It had it. I've saw em sick with distemper. They just get poor and feeble an wilt away. Never saw one with rabies. I wish I could get some of those rabies block things they use to drop out of airplanes. Id get some to feed em.

Rabies came thru New England in the mid 90's and nearly wiped out the coon population..It spreads very quickly..I don't know wheret the vet got his information about vaccinations but he is totally wrong.. The rabies vaccine for dogs is 99.9 effective.. As far as distemper is concerned, the symtoms appear the same as rabies and both are always fatal..Get those hounds vaccinated..

Yeah same here, it costs $40-$50 for an office visit so the vet can take the dogs temp, look in its mouth feel around on it stomach, and look in its ears. Oh and then you have to pay for the shot too.

You can give your own here but if your dog is bitten by anything rabid or if your dog bites a person, without a vet signing off on the shot its all down hill for your dog from there.

They dont ask too many questions either. There are rabies clinics given by local vets all over this area. That helps with costs. The law is the law. A 10.00 shot could cost you a law suit and a dead dog.

They don't give clinics around here anymore. I called the county and complained. They said tuff lol. So I went to the next county up. Then my county sent me a bill for not having shots in my own county!!! I told em checks in the mail

i'm 100percent sure my dog won't bite no one and if it does it won't be the county putting it down cause they won't have the chance. i used to goto the clinics but now they don't have them or i've heard about them after theyve passed no advertisement. the last one i went to it took 4 hours to get mine done. i don't know what todo guess just look into doing it myself and risk the lawsuit cause mine arent getting the shots like they should. hard to keep one vaccinated when the clinics aren't the same everytime and you have to jump around. i feel the county should have to handle it thru the health dept.
