Richard's Question.....

It probably goes both ways but they say you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.. I don't claim to have any wisdom but I'll share my experience....a few years ago when I was fairly new to Redbones,( I still consider myself newcomer) I was blessed to purchase a dog from someone in Indiana on the recommendation of a guy that goes on here as Tylerman....I grew up with hounds (mostly Black 'n' Tan's) which we hunted on anything we could find in the Arizona deserts but had never been to any competitions...There were no hound events around here in southern Ca., but we heard of one in Arizona, so I loaded up this dog and a female we had raised and headed out. This dog, Rip, was sold to us as a coondog and was a bench champion but supposedly had not been shown in hunts or trials. I entered all the events just to jump in and gain the experience. There were field trials but no hunts. He got excited when he smelled the track...I just released him when I was told and he was off with the rest...I don't recall whether we won first line or first tree that day, because thereafter he always placed, but I had very little to do with his success other than filing the entries and leading up to the take-off. We also won Best in show female with our other dog and Rip took an RQE Champion male win. He seemed to have more of an intensity than most of the others. I wish we had had the opportunity to put him in some hunts. Possibly he would not have stood out in the elite company in the South and Midwest, but what he did, he did on his own......He is 10 years old now, still sound....still wants to hunt....
