Tree possum

What do you guys do when your older dog trees a possum. Scold them, take a switch to them? How is the bet way to handle this?

I shoot it out and whip them every time they grab it until theyve had enough.

I asked the same question while back so I called several guys on the phone , the ones that goes to the world . I figure if they're going there they better be broke dogs . I called Curt A. , Jeff D . , Scott E . , and few old timers that pleasure hunt too .

NO ONE HAD A DEFINITE ANSWER !!!!

Myself , I break mine off of deer , fox , with Tri Tronics so why not do the same with this . But be careful on the tree cause my buddy took the tree out of his but got it back now . To me you have to do when they're young , that away it won't become a habit later and break'em off the TRACK & not on the tree , same as you do with other off game . But I wouldn't shoot none out , sending dog mixed signals . JMO

But remember alot dogs are different , what might work for one , might not with another . But YOU HAVE TO be consistent in your training . ( Good Luck )

Quick buzz with the Tri-Tronics, not a word said, and continue to hunt.

Call dog off the tree and go on. I don't competition hunt and my dogs hunt close. I'm out there to have fun and I don't sweat the small stuff.

Great to hear that James. My two are treeing too. I believe they are the boldest pups I've ever raised. I sent Mark the papers a while back. Thanks for letting me know,

I have broke several dogs off of opposum but I had the most trouble with a dog that placed 6th at the ukc world.. He treed so many I lost count and tried everything.. An old timer around here taught me something... When dog trees a opposum shoot It out.. Put it in the dog box with the dog... Put a fat pinch of snuff wintergreen in dogs mouth.. Do it every three hrs about 3 times... He will make a mess in dog box but problem fixed....

I use....... every possum...... that I see in the road.I will catch the possum or knock it out and I will leash the dog real close to a bush or tree so he don't have any slack to jerk or pull away, me and the dog will have a 5 minute meeting using a 4 foot poke stick and a tritronics,I will use my stick on that dogs hide until I am tired, Then I use the Tritronics.............It is best to let a pup break hisself in the yard with a manmade setup..... before hunting them hard.I have two 6 yr olds and I will give them a refresher about 2/3 times a year.On a rainy night you can make a lot of progress, sometimes I have done this before and after I have hunted,Be sure the collar is on tight. Put that possum in his nose as you work on the dog, stand on his head may help speed up the process too...Turn the tritronics on 4, then ....BURN ...the dog on high for a few seconds........The only words I use while doing this is ...THE NO COMMAND and THE DOGS NAME.......

Well, you see here, what you do is catch a live possum with your bare hands and then kill it. Then follow this step by step process:

1. Gut it and shove it over the dogs head for some reason, and make sure it can't breath during this time.
2. Pull the possum off and jam it up the dogs butt.
3. Put the dog in a barrel with a bunch of rocks and roll it down a hill for a while.
4. Then let the dog out of the barrel, pull the possum out of its butt, and then beat him with the dead possum until you are tired.

LOL Just so you all know that was all a joke, but you will hear a bunch of dumb things similar to that. I would recommend a shock collar and whenever that hound shows any interest in a possum give him and TT tickle.

Most dogs are smart enough to know when they have done something wrong. I tough word or two and send them on...if it gets to be a common thing then you ramp it up.

sounds crazy

I know this will sound crazy to most, had an old man tell me that he use to break his by catching a possum in a trap and he would release the possum in the yard or in the lot with the dog and everytime that dog went to grab that possum he would blast him with the shocker untill eventually everywhere that possum went the dog would go the opposite. Said he did this so as not to send mixed signals to the dog by shooting one out or running the risk of shocking him on the tree which could also confuse the hound.

I myself have never resorted to this yet ( maybe i havent owned one bad enuff yet) i usually display my dis pleasure with a switch and lead him off the tree.

Even some of the brokest dogs will bump a possum every now and then. I just snap it give them a firm jerk on the lead and say NO! send them on or put them up. I have had very few dogs who I felt had a possum problem. Might look at one possum a year, (might). So don't sweat it,
