My whole life I've been around coon hounds we have trained a many. We always caught a caged coon let the young dog at it for a couple min. Took the coon to the woods let it out and waited then turned dog loose to track and tree then shot the coon out to the dog. But is this wrong been reading a lot of post that say never let a young dog see a caged coon only catch and turn loose. I'm actually starting a 7 month old so maybe if I do what others say as in domt show the pup the caged coon first he will turn out better. Opinions please?

jmo i would do what has worked in the past ,,i use the same method just dont shoot m out

There's no need for them to see the coon to start with , that's just us being scared they won't run it if we don't get em' amped up first.

I do try and turn em' loose at night and wait a while to make the transition to actually hunting them go smoother ... every step takes adjustment and I like to know what they can do before I start hammering at my hunting spots

we put ours in a roll cage and let the pup wallow it around for a while. It's also easier to keep them for a day or so in the roll cage. The first couple of times we turn it loose we let the pup see it run then will turn him loose on it. After that we let them loose, give them some time then turn pup loose and see if he can pick up trail. We've got video or our Smoke dog when he was 7 or 8 months old going crazy over the roll cage with coon in it, have a short piece of rope tied to to make it easier to hang, he liked to grab the rope and jerk the cage around
