I believe that a club should offer more than just night hunts and bench shows.

Many clubs do hold different things...hunts, shows, treeing contests, water races, squirrel dog/cur and beagle events, I know some hold coyote and porcupine contests etc etc...as well as buddy hunts and hide hunts etc..

Local clubs often have a primary directive of hosting sanctioned events such as night hunts and bench shows. However they are also a local gathering place for coonhunters, it is where many of us met for the first time, it is the place where friendships are developed, where we learn about other styles of hunting, breeds of hound, and often is the place where dog and hunting supplies are sold via word of mouth. Many clubs offer buddy hunts, club competitions for dogs and members (such as dog of the year), dinners a few times, and even Christmas parties for their members.
On the side is the threat of local ordinance changes, the first line of defense against these is the local club, a good club secretary gets the agendas for local commissioner meetings and if a animal or hunting proposal is considered the local club can attend and make their voices heard on the issue..

I have an idea that will raise money, create good relationships and be able to hunt in different areas. Here it is.....
It's called Inner Club Hunts. You need at least 4 clubs to participate. Each club will host one inner club hunt. The club with the most plus points wins the hunt and bragging rights till the next hunt. You can hunt as many dogs as the host club has guides but only 5 scores will count. After all clubs host, the club with the most wins, will host the inner club championship. All clubs will put up $100 the wining club gets all the money.
I am in the heart of NC and there are several clubs within an hour from our club and I think that this would be a great program.

I know one of the clubs here objective was to send someone to bring coons in from other areas and brought alot in here and sold them. but the got scared and quit doing it.

OUR CLUB HOLD A FESTIBLE EACH YR. CALLED COON DAYS WE HAVE A DINNER AND FREE KIDS BENCH SHOW,AUCTION ,TREEING CONTEST,LIVE BAND AND A GUN OR LIGHT RAFFELL.USUALLY BRINGS SOME EXTRA MEMBERSHIP.
WE ALSO HAVE PUT ON A HORSE SHOW FOR CLUB FUND RASER ,WE HAVE HAD HORSE SHOWS TO HELP OUT THE NEEDY.
GIVE A SCHOLARSHIP MONEY FOR SCHOOL EACH YR.WHEN AVAILABLE.
SEND FLOWERS OR GIFTS TO MEMBERS OR FAMILY FUNERALS.
HAVE CLUB HUNTS EACH MONTH.GIVE $300 EACH YR TO HIGHSCORING CLUB MEMBER AT CLUB HUNTS.
ALSO HAVE REG. HUNTS

We do a points system on Ukc and akc for club members. If your a club member and pay your entry fee to hunt you get 10 pts. Just for hunting. if you win your cast you get 20 pts. After the last hunt of the year in Ukc and akc we take the highest top 12 out of each kc and have a handler of the year hunt. Top 4 highest scoring dogs from each cast goes back out to determine the winner in that kc. Last year was our first year doing it and we have a big trophy for the winner. This year where still going to so the huge trophy but going to add a dog box or a garmin to the winner this year. Like a dog box in one kc and a garmin in the other. Oh ya to determine the 4th dog on the last cast the club votes in the final dog. It's real fun all year long.

Also like Chris explained in his post is a good example why we have clubs. But let's not forget its also meant for our younger generations That's coming up. They learn a lot when they grow up in a coon club. From what I have seen the one thing they learn the most is the art of bull sh*tting. LOL!!!!

Those sound like great clubs. I belong to a good club. I want to make it a great club. It may be hard to do with just 10 members but we got to start somewhere.

Problem now is someone has to beat him to win it and he's got some pretty tough dogs! I think its working though and everyone is having a lot of fun going hunting together.

I think there are many reasons to have a club outside of hosting licensed events. They are also social and community organizations for coonhunters. I know our local club has non-licensed club hunts, a dog of the year run-off, buddy hunts, fish fry's, hog roasts, licensed hunts, etc. They are also good will ambassadors to the community and the landowners they hunt on.

I didn't read every post on this thread but it should be mentioned that many, if not most of the clubs in my area are "coon hunter/conservation" clubs or just conservation clubs that hold coon hound events. These clubs have many projects they sponsor and support that are not directly involved with nite hunts. Conservation projects, 4-H support, working with the DNR, etc. Our club (Wyatt Consevation Coonhunters Club) hosts 15 or more hunts per year and yet our average monthly club meeting spends less than 25% of it's time discussing hunts and many meeting never see it even brought up. Ours is much more than just a coon hunt club.
