Who cares if he barks at a caged coon if he runs tracks and locates....
Like Ron said let another dog go nuts on the caged coon and he likely will too...most young dogs won't know to go nuts on a caged coon....mine ran over to it and looked at it and trotted off...let out another dog that went nuts and he came over and joined...released it...let the dogs loose to tree it..shot it out...been treeing coon ever since
Keep on his butt and get to the tree when he does...if he is right pet him..praise him...knock the coon out...repeat till he becomes confident and solid...then continue petting and praising and ween him off knocking coon out..
Young dogs just starting lack confidence and are unsure of themselves and unsure on what they should be doing..
With the leaves off I often find the coon before the dog...I am there waiting for them...they hit the tree I am there...
