Anyone addicted?

Im having some really bad withdraws... Recently got out of the coonhunting game and its no fun. Only reason i did is at the moment i have way too much on my plate and not enough time nor money to do them all.

I just cannot stand it, not hearing a hound at night just don't feel right. Been a coonhunter for over 20 years (started when i was 5). Just hard to stay home on such a nice night.

I will start back as soon as life permits. Until then you guys keep them good stories on the board and enjoy every second you have out with them dogs.

Take care and god bless....

my wife says all i do is hunt. but she's wrong. i do hunt but it's a lot more than hunting. it's the internet site, facebook, searching for dogs, shoping for gear, working on gear, trapping coon, taking care of coon, caring for dog, maintaining kennel, cleaning up the yard, hunting for dogs. most of your friends are coon hunters or dogger of some kind. when you travel you look at all the woods and wonder how the hunting would be. you notice every truck with a dog box and wonder what kind of hunting he does. your second home is the woods and you know the signs of changing seasons. i could go on but you know what i mean. coon hunting is a life.

I know exactly how you feel....

Starting my 6th summer of working out of state....biggest thing I miss from home is my dog and the farm....not hearing a dog track n tree at night is a killer for me...

Hopefully a permanent job comes really soon....can't take the instability...

I too started when I was really young....I always said I'd give up ALL my hobbies if I could keep a good coon dog...

Unfortunately keeping a coon dog in life can be one of the harder things to do....some places don't have coon...some aren't hound hunter friendly...sometimes life don't allow for a hound...sometimes life doesn't have time to hunt a hound...

I am lucky my buddy keeps my dog for me while I am gone...and even hunts him a bit...he has his own so mine doesn't get hunting priority but he gets to run the farm every day and hunt once in a while when I am away....

I have never been what I call a hard hunter. It has been more like a hobby for me, and still I haven't been able to quit. From 1977 to 1993, I never had less than 3 jobs and put myself through college, but also managed to hunt 2-3 nights a week. From 1993 to 1999, I had to stay home nights that my wife was working to care for babies and/or toddlers. I did have two buddies that helped me hunt my dogs during these years. From 1999 to now, we have been involved heavily in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and baseball. The baseball has involved school ball, recreation ball, and travel teams. I pretty much hunt 4 nights/week September- December. Weather permitting, I hunt as much as possible during January, February, and March. I basically don't hunt during our quiet time (April-July). Summer time I go back to hunting 2-3 nights/week.

Each time I hit a bad stretch and bring up quitting my family talks me out of it.

I really can't see me ever quitting now unless my health gets really bad.

Push comes to shove, it has been a wild ride, and I don't regret a minute of it!!!!!

Yea, it's tough to quit! I went through the divorce thing, and sold almost everything I had that went with coonhunting. I decided to put all my time in my 2 boys, and it's the best thing I've ever done! Once they got older, I got the itch to start over again. I'm not into it like I once was, but that's probably because of lack of dog power, or I'm just older, or a combination of both. We have to prioritize what's the most important to us, and use common sense, and things usually work out for the best.

my grandfather hunted fox with hounds until he was too old to go. yet none of his 3 sons ever hunted. my father never hunted with dogs yet by brother, when he was alive, hunted coon and rabbits with dogs and since i retired i hunt whatever my dogs jump, but deer. none of our children hunt, at all. one of my earliest memories is of my two cousins teaching a hound to track an old dried up coon skin.

I'm addicted. Got out for about 2 years when I got married and had my first child so I could devote that time to family. Once my son tuned 3 I took him for his first coon hunt with a buddy of mine and he enjoyed it so much he asked for a coon dog for his birthday. Needless to say he got just what he asked for and now the whole family's involved. I hunt about 4-5 nights a week from September-May then its only 1 night a week just to exercise the dogs. When im not hunting or working I'm usually talking about hunting, or talking dogs with someone on the phone. Or fooling with a pup in the yard.

Never quit just cut back

Family and all needs to come first. Best just to cut back sometimes but never quit all together.

Iv gone full circle, started as a teenager with a neighbor about 40 years ago and hunted pretty hard for a few years, starting a business and raising a family shut me down for about 15 years and then one day about 10 years ago my son said dad we should get a coondog.
We hunted hard togeather until my first grandchild was born and now life has my sons huntin down to about once a week. I still hunt pretty hard, if i miss a couple nights my wife starts askin if im sick.
All those years that i wasnt in the woods with a dog, i never stopped missin it.

I will probably keep at it until i have to wear one of thos gizmos that hollers HELP IV FALLEN AND I CANT GET UP.

Been married 21 years, my wife always said I'd rather have you out running your dogs than sitting in a bar. Only time she ever gave me a hard time was when I made plans to hunt on New Year's Eve. I don't do that anymore.

As far as being addicted I remember years ago my coon hunting partner went to Colorado to hunt mule deer and elk. We had saved up money and tag preference points for 3 years. On the drive out I said "I'd rather be home coon hunting" he looked at me and said "I was thinking the same thing".

i was on vacation in panama, at a nice resort. i saw a squirrel and thought, i could be home hunting now. when i go to a competition hunt, and i rarely go, i think, i wasted two nights when i could have been hunting both.
