Because MOST of the time, not all but most, they are not fully matured, mentally or physically, and because of that you cant really be sure if they will be a solid coondog once fully matured

If the dog is not mature , she wouldn't be in heat ... Mother Nature cares not for man's theories .

It is rare that a dog will be a coondog with a couple hard seasons under her belt before her first heat ... but if the gyp is one of those rare talents and you know in your gut she's the dog you have been waiting for ... then there's nothing wrong with breeding her.

You are better off to listen to your dog and what she is telling you than to listen to what someone thinks is the truth ... dogs didn't invent lying , man did ...

I have a 10 month old walker pup here in heat right now. She's no where near mature. Yea she maybe physically mature enough to BREED but why would you put her thru that? How can you know you've contributed to the breed or simply produced aNOTHER litter of dogs?

Puppies having puppies....can't be a good thing. When a bitch has a litter it can be hard on their body, even harder if the pup is still growing themselves. Why rush? Wait until they are 2 years, healthier for the dam and pups.

I liken this theory to young girls getting pregnant at 8,9,10. yes, Mother Nature says their bodies are mature enough but their bodies and minds are not.

most gyps come in between 9-12 months some later, WHY would you want to breed a puppy???? for God's sake its still a puppy!!! wait until 2 or 3 and give her time to grow up and mature physically and mentally. you want her to be able to handle whelping and take care of the pups. Do you want to be bottle feeding 10 puppies every 2 hours b/c you bred her too young and she has no clue what to do???

I have never heard of wild animals skipping their first heats nor have I ever seen a dog that cycled right have trouble whelping in a way that could be blamed on their age .... young mothers have the healthiest babies and recouperate faster.

I don't breed on the first heat , but that doesn't mean I am gonna exxagerate or dissuade someone else who chooses to .... it's just a hobby and we can all do what we want to do .

You can do what you want but this fella asked why most people say not to, so we answered him, your not giving the man any help if your just fighting with everyone else.

When you want others to agree with your " why " ... it helps if you understand it yourself and it's the truth.

When you start exaggerating and straying from the truth to promote your ideas then nobody benefits.

I will say that in all performance animals ... getting past the sophmore slump and across the finish line weeds out alot of young superstars that were thought to be breeding quality ... I dont even breed pullets ... seen em' change too much their first moult and settle into a hen that I didn't like .

It's up to each of us to blend our experiences , our gut feeling and with the due diligence and go with that ... if someone has done that ... then whatever they decide to do will be the right thing for them ....even if it's not what I would do .

Wild animals typically have a cycle once a year, and life expectancy of 1/4 to 1/2 the life span of domestic animals. And I have seen problems with young dogs being bred too early, and every heat cycle, but 17 years in the veterinary field will show you things most people won't see.
