Stalled Track

I need some advise. Bought a dog from out of state, dog hunts good, cold nosed, good mouth, hard hard tree dog. Problem is that two out of three times when you cast him and he strikes, he moves a track out good for about fifty to a hundred yards and then just stalls out. He will circle a ten to fifteen yard area out and just waller it to death and can't move the track any further until I go in and make him move on, then he picks the track back up and runs and tree's like he should. What is the deal and how do I fix it?

How long does it take him to finish the track? Sounds like he can't run track.

He can finish a track out fine and fast once I push him on. It's like he wants to mill around on the same spot the coon did. He mainly does it around water, on a creek or pond.

I've seen several dogs have trouble on water. It cuold be the water and he wants to run every inch of the track.
