Pick a pup (poll)

I raised a litter last summer and have 2 pups. I am trying to start them both but I have a good training opportunity and want help picking which one gets to take a crack at it. The pups couldn't be more different.....both pups are just turning 9 months old here goes.

Pup #1 Bold, friendly, responds well to training, smart, fun to be around, loves other dogs can take correction, game agressive (saw one cage coon)....take it hunting alone and it kinda stands around looks at you or plays in the water...total goof in the woods.

Pup#2 Odd dog, friendly but a little nervous, dramatic, can't take correction, won't eat treats, will calm when you pet it, but jumpy when your not, doesn't follow commands real well, a little nervous around the coon in the cage), take it hunting and it goes well by itself. Will run track all day long and has from a young age hunts til its had its fill then goes back to the truck. Its out looking for game when you cut it.

Neither can really be hunted with other dogs as they just run them to death and I don't have those kinda woods, neither has treed yet and both have been hunted 4-5X since our snow went away...

So guys and gals which pups do you give the chance to tomorrow???

I learned a long time ago to one work one pup at a time. Ninety percent of us don't have the resources to do more than 1 pup justice.

I would start # 1 and work # 2 doing yard work, etc. to build its confidence. Maybe, even enlist the help a youngster to help # 2 dog.

I don't understand why many coon hunters don't like dogs that don't take punishment well. Those are by far the easiest to train as long as they have no shyness.

I agree with everything you said Larry, but I was careful to word it as correction, not punishment.....This pup cannot even take a good verbal scolding without being on hits back barking in fear....yet it doesn't stop said behavior....so how do you correct a drama queen without damaging it but getting the message across??

sounds like pup 2 has more hunting on his mind than pup 1 but you say hes on the nervous side more than likely he just needs alot of social time showing him that people wont hurt him and probly make a good dog with time if i was able to hunt a pup which im not pup 2 would be my choice buthe may or may not come outa the shyness 1 of the better dogs i had at 1 time at 6 months old was so shy and nervous he run in the box when came towards him had to drag him out 2 wks foolin with him everyday he was a differnt dog wasnt shy to no 1 after that and made a good dog

I personally have to have one that can take a whooping. Sounds like #2 isn't mentally tough enough for someone like me.

Im taking #1....its smart..can be corrected...fun dog to be around...will work a caged coon...

At 9 months it will very likely learn to go hunting..sounds like it is still a puppy and not quite ready yet...nothin wrong with that...

#2 sounds good..running track and hunting....but sounds like it may be veryyyy difficult to work with...and who knows if it will ever tree...its ran tracks for a long time and never treed?? Maybe ive been lucky but the ones ive worked learned coons climb trees the first time they are worked...after that when.hunted that always know to look up..atleast locating trees..i can build their confidence and get em to stay treed..but they gotta know to.tree.and wanna tree...cant fix or teach that...thats what makes tree dogs what they are...

Good luck with em! They both can turn out....but #2 just sounds like it will be tough to handle....

I pick # 2

# 1(" total goof in the woods.")
#2 ("Its out looking for game when you cut it.")
sounds like #2 is ready for a good training opportunity now

what will you do with the one that's left ? if it's not ready that should work in your favor to kennel it up for another month or 2 & work with it on it's weakness

the votes look like they could end up splitting at this point that would put it back to you which way are you leaning towards?

are they males or females?

very good post
I hope you keep us updated this could help me next time I'm
looking for a young dog

The pups are both females. To be honest I am leaning towards pup #1 eventhough the votes are very even (and I appreciate all of the responses and votes). I guess I am leaning towards #1 because she reminds me of her mother and her uncle that I both owned and raised. Both were very agressive at the caged coon and ran and treed them well once they saw that first one climb. At that young age being game agressive makes the training opportunity I have more likely to help rather than make the nervous pup even more nervous....she makes me feel like the wrong experience would set her back more than the other. please keep voting though I have til tomorrow at 4. Thanks so much.

#1, and keep her home and away from coon until first birth day. She's the best of the two; just not mature enough.

Thanks Daryl!!

I have heard lots of good things about the english breed and I always had a soft spot for a houndy looking dark Redtick dog!! I will certainly let everyone know how it goes today. Their mother was just so easy to start I got spoiled.

not all dogs make it for sure but they all deserve a fair shot!!

I'd keep pup 1 and if possibl let it run loose for a month or so. This teaches them how to chase stuff and get around.

Due to the results I took Pup #1 and she did fantastic!! She ran and treed her first coon (turn out) maybe 5 yards from where her mother treed her first one. All too often a turn out coon turns out bad, but this was worked out just perfect!!

Thanks for all that voted, much appreciated!!
