Air rifles?

Are any of you using air rifles for coon hunting or other varmint hunting?
If so what caliber and brand are you using? Open sights or scope? How well has it been working and how much did you pay for it?

Don't believe the hype! I bought a gamo whisper and really was excited to kill coons with it. It's pretty accurate but doesn't penetrate the skull at all. Takes 30-50 shots to bring a boar out and I know I hit him 90% of those shots cause I skinned him out and most pellets were right under the skin. I use mine now to shoot rats out of the barn. I had to call a friend to bring a .22 one night when I tried to use it with the high velocity ammo I ran out of shells everytime I hit him he just shook like he been stung by a bee.

my buddy had a pyramid air pellet gun 22 cal. that thang was nasty. never shot any coon wit it but shot some squirrels and rabbits. would cut a ragid hole at 20 yrds and pretty accurate at 50. it weighs to much to coon hunt with since has a chamber for compressed air. was nice tho bit like the gamos it was loud more of a air sound n not the spring. n makes a hexk of a whop when the pellet hits.

If the store Ammo shelves stay as bare as they are, we may all be using air rifles before long.

Just do the math. Air gun pellets range from 7-15 grains. The fastest ones out there won't get over 1000 fps with the 15 grain pellets. By contrast, a .22 lr is a 40 grain bullet at 1200 fps or so. At it's very best, the air rifle is less than a third of the basic 22. You really want to stand out there and plink away at a coon with less than a third of the power a 22 gives you? Even a dang coon deserves better than that.

I have a Gamo varmint hunter HP which is 1400fps.I use PBA pellets.. All I used during squirrel and rabbit season this year and only shot at one rabbit i didn't kill. I didn't use it to coon hunt so I cant speak about that. The varmint hunter is around $300 . I dont know about now but a while back you could get a decent 22 for that.

Air Rifles

I bought a Benjamin Trail just to check it out, used the .22 hollow points got it sighted in took it shot one coon with it at around 70/80 feet one shot' came out graveyard dead. I would'nt use it much has a liitle to much weight to it. But a good air rifle will definitely get it done. Gave 198.00 for it, it makes alot less noise than a .22 rifle and the ammo is alot cheaper.

If I'm lying I'm dying, I shot a coon with that gamo .177 at least 30 times and 10 pellets were found under the skin between the skull and hide. The rest in the body I'm a pretty fair shot so it wasn't my shooting. Maybe the .22 is better but I wouldn't purchase another .177 for the money.

I occasionally hunt with a guy that uses a 1200fps .177 with PBA ammo. It will usually get them out with one shot.

Barrel rifling was invented in Augsburg, Germany at the end of the fifteenth century.[5] In 1520 August Kotter, an armourer of Nuremberg, Germany improved upon this work. Though true rifling dates from the mid-16th century, it did not become commonplace until the nineteenth century.
