I'm a youth and just started hunting this year. I'v got a pup thats 9 months old and has been treeing a few coons, but tonight she treed a possum in a hole. I didn't know what to do so I just told her no and pulled her off the hole. What is the best way to break her of this? Any advice will be appreciated.

She is only nine months old if she ismtreeimg coon consistently do what you did and she will propably break herself if not take her to man in defiance Ohio he will break her his name is Jerry more house

Just keep her in coons , keep scolding her when she does wrong, praise her when shes doing right , the light should click after while

At that age, just leash it up and yank it away without saying a word, and then praise her really well when she trees a coon. A puppy might not be all that smart, but they will work for reward better than fear of punishment. If in a year or so down the road you are still having possum troubles, electricity will take care of that.

I went last night and she treed a coon, I petted her up good so maybe she will correct herself. Thanks for everyones advice!

Personally, I would have made more use of the training oppertunity that was laid out in front of you.

I know the dog is young, but a dog that gets in the habbit of treeing possum is a lot tougher to break.

A possum in a hole is a GREAT training oppertunity at any age.

How much "training" you do depends on the temperment of the dog.

I agree with Josh...I don't want a dog staying at a hole...let alone a hole with a possum in it....


If the dog knows what NO! Means great...but I woulda yanked it out ta there and tapped it on the nose with my finger or glove...doesn't hurt em..just a good "scare"....while telling it NO! And BAD! Which a dog should already knowbefore it is in the woods...


You did fine...its easier to break a problem the first time though...if they keep getting away with it they get harder to break....

Like was said try to keep the pup in thick coon...in my experience if you can keep a pup straight its a lot less likely to trash when its older..possums and skunks are tough..especially this time of year as they seem to be out in full force...

Keep praising and encouraging at good trees and discipline as much as needed at bad trees..slick/off game...

That to me at her age is good. After a while she will know what u want her to do. Most of that she will grow out of just give it time. I would not woop her whatever u do.

As long as the pup is showing me what is up a tree I'll let it slid for a little bit since it is actually treeing... holes are armidilos most of the time but I.did say most of.the time..get you some ammonia and hold the dog.back throw a little in the hole let the dog stick.its.head in the hole.and step on its.head or get behind it and hold it until it can't take no more safe and easy for a youth to.break a.dog.that way so you don't take a chance on breaken him on a coin in the hole just the hole itself..

Many guys get into a hurry about getting their pups started. At nine months, that dog is still a pup. Your pup sounds gamey, which is a very positive sign. You did the right thing. I have one the same age and she likes to dig up a few field mice on the way to the woods. I yank her chain and tell her no and she is getting the picture.

If your dog continues to tree grinners when she is older, pull her off the tree, shoot the grinner out, cut it up the belly and hold the dead grinner over her face until the dog almost passes out. I can about assure you that that dog will quit treeing that trash.
