NC Legislative Update 4/2/13
this is an email update from Henri McClees:
1256 bills filed at the Legislature through today. Here are some highlights:
SB#689 Amend Trapping Law was filed today by Senator Norman Sanderson. It would amend NCGS §113-291.6(d) to allow conibear type traps only in the water and in areas in which beaver and otter may be lawfully trapped. To watch the progress of this bill, you may visit: http://www.ncleg.net/gascripts/Bill...amp;BillID=S689
Many gun bills have been filed. The entire list of bills filed to date may be found at:
http://www.ncleg.net/gascripts/last...SessionNumber=1
Black Bear Management SB#352 filed by Senator Harry Brown has not been calendared for hearing as of today. We oppose this bill.
Senator Buck Newton’s SB #224 would allow Sunday hunting with guns. The House companion bill is HB#360. We continue to oppose any legislative effort to legalize gun hunting on Sunday. Dog hunters have enough enemies already! We do NOT want dog hunters to take the blame for increased resentment against all gun hunters caused by Sunday hunting:
--Noise of guns and dogs around churches on Sunday morning;
--Noise of rifles firing on Sunday morning, when many people get their only morning to sleep in;
--Trucks lined on roads on Sunday morning, when people are not accustomed to seeing hunters;
--Conflicts with people who are used to peaceful Sundays outdoors;
--Joggers, bicyclists, horseback riders, bird watchers, tourists;
--Increased family conflicts between hunting and other family activities;
--Conflicts with everyone else who is not used to gunfire and hunters on Sundays;
--Greater strain on WRC budget for additional enforcement.
According to a 2006 survey paid for with taxpayer dollars, well over half of North Carolinians oppose Sunday hunting. Over half of hunters oppose Sunday hunting. Survey results are found at http://www.ncwildlife.org/Portals/0...gStudyNov06.pdf
Joe and Henri McClees, lobbyists for the NC Sporting Dog Association, are conservative Christians. The bedrock of our opposition is we believe the Bible is true. The Ten Commandments may have been removed from state schools and courthouses, but these words are true. How often have you heard it said that if everyone lived by the Ten Commandments, we would have less crime and a better society? Most people know this is true in the general sense. Now, we have the opportunity to uphold this concept in a specific way. The Bible says to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy, which means set apart for God. Use the six other days for your work of every description, and see that your family and workers and animals do the same. For these reasons, we are opposed to Sunday hunting and always will be opposed.
Even if you are not personally committed to obeying the Ten Commandments, it is well to remember that many of your neighbors are opposed to hunting on Sundays. Most North Carolinians oppose Sunday hunting for the reasons set forth in the survey.
Our concern for dog hunters is we are the hunters MOST LIKELY TO BE BLAMED for hunting problems on Sunday. If there is a backlash against hunters because of problems with Sunday hunting, dog hunters will be blamed first.
--Barking dogs when people are trying to sleep in on Sunday morning
--Barking dogs disturbing outdoor activities of people who are used to quiet Sundays outdoors
--Barking dogs and bullets flying during church services
--Barking dogs and roadside hunting is becoming a deeply unpopular aspect of dog hunting
Other hunters will not come to our rescue if there is a public outcry against Sunday hunting. Dog hunters could take all the blame, and be banned. We do not want more rules against dog hunting. The NC Sporting Dog Assn. was formed to protect dog hunting, and we need your help.
If you oppose Sunday hunting, now is the time to speak. Please immediately write, call, or email these Senators and tell them you oppose Sunday hunting:
