Back Surgery

just curious to how many of you folks have had back surgery i have a ruptured disk that is on my sciatic nerve causing my left leg to be completely numb all the time while my right leg has feeling that comes and goes i also have two bulging disk the doc basically told me surgery was my only choice due to the leg numbness i can honestly say i've never been in this kind of pain any of guys had any experience with this sort of thing like how long it took you to bounce back i know i'll probably never be back to 100% but anything has to be better then what i'm goin through now

I had a similar set of problems when I was in my mid-40s. Couldn't use my left leg much at all and the pain was debilitating. Had the surgery and was better immediately. Surgeon had me up walking and using the bad leg as soon as I woke up from surgery. I was running, whitewater canoeing, and chasing dogs through the woods within 3 weeks of the surgery. It has been 12 years now and I have never had any more problems with the back. Everybody's experience is different, but it worked out great for me. Good luck.

Back surgery

I had back surgery back in 2001 due to a work related injury.Fractured my L4 vertabrae. They performed a spinal fusion on me.Now I have 2 rods & 8 screws in my back.I still have minor sciatic nerve damage in my left leg also.Mine doesn't sound as bad as yours though.Sometimes I can be just standing, and all of a sudden my leg will go numb.Usually the worst time I have with it is at night while trying to fall asleep. The doctor's have prescribed me a medicine called Elavil though that helps out tremendously with the sleeping problem.Hope all goes well with your surgery. It's a long recoveery. At least for me it was.

Andy,

why do you say that?Just wondering because I only take it if I feel like I need it and have had no problems.Onliest thing I don't like about it,is that in the warmer months,it makes me sweat like crazy. But,according to the list of side effects, thats one of them.

That's the same as my script.I know it is an anti-depressant.My doctor told me that years ago when he first prescribed it.But,he also said it is used often to alleviate nerve pain too. It's the only medicine prescribed to me that would do the trick. In my opinion,it works wonders.I told him after being on it awhile that I only took it when needed. He told me as long as I wasn't feeling weird or having any major side effects, that was okay. And I don't,except for the darn sweating.I hate that.Have you been on it?If so,have you had any bad reaction to it?

my wife was given elavil for restless legs. it caused her heart rate to skyrocket. so they changed it to hydrocodon. the doctors told her that in the long run she can tolerate hydrocodon much better. she also has some nerve damage from a bad knee replacement surgery.

How many surgeons have you been too? If your answer is one get more opinions (see at least two more surgeons) and ONLY deal with those that specialize in spinal surgery

Dr./Surgeons are just like mechanics, some good some bad. Get several opinions, if you call the office and he doesn't have a wait list find another Dr. the good ones are always booked up.

It's not worth rushing something like this, you'll only get one shot at it, many doctors WILL NOT try to clean up someone else's botched job too much liability involved.. Take it from someone who had a successful spinal fushion over 15yrs ago!

Matt I too have had the flare up like you. Lower L4 L5 bulging disks degenerative ect...bla bla,,,bla bla it hurts like all get out. I wake up every day in pain, walk every day in pain I just deal with it.
I went to two specialists for this problem and got the same response, start off with needles, pain killers and wait for it to progress. I felt I wasn not learning from these two so I went to Vanderbilt, I have a long history with Vandy years ago with cancer which I personally think has caused part of the arthritis in the body. Like you I have laid on my back for days unable to walk. Then walk with a cane then cripple around then walk. No drugs just nsaids and heat/cold packs.
Vandy sat me down and we talked in great detail and length. Im always impressed with Vanderbilt. Long story short they told me to do these things to prevent future flare ups and stable the back(spine). 1. Loose all the excess fat on the body, dont make the back and body carry more than it needs to. 2. Leave the fast fatty fried foods alone. 3. Get on a exercize program made for building the stomach and back muscles. 3. Cardio cardio cardio

If you are allready at a proper weight the back exersizes and muscle builing to help support the spine helped for me.

Remember every time a flare up occures thats damage to the spine. Good Luck

Back Problems

Just remember once you have it you can't go back. I had 8 back surgery's and many other procedures total of 10. I'm one of the lucky ones that they fused me together wrong. My pelvis is turned and now I have one leg longer than the other and have pain ever day. Just had a Lumpar Epidural sterid injection (Number 5 ) in 4 years 3 at a time. Just saying I would do anything to have my life back to where it was. I take pain pills all the time just to get by. Went to the Mayo and they did help me get off some of the meds. and ways to help me. Went from a wheel chair to walking and hunting. But still have problems. Give me your e-mail and I will send you an e-mail that was sent to me by mistake. It will shock you. 1 out of 5 don't work !!!!!!!!!!

back surgery

Andy,I have heard a lot of horror stories about people having surgery on their backs. And I'm sure they may be true.I,myself,am one of the lucky ones I reckon. And hopefully, you are too.I found that the best thing after my operation (and still is)to do was WALK,WALK,WALK.The more you push yourself, the sooner you'll be back to normal.Good Luck!!!!!

andy

i had the same thing done to me on Jan. 30th, the doc. just released me on the 28th of Feb. i put up with back pain and numbness in my legs for 2 years, the doc, removed the herneation from my disk and did a disk decompresion and a nerve decompresion, when i woke up the pain in my legs was gone, i have about a 2 inch cut on my back and i feel great, back is a little stiff, but it is still swelled some , i wish i would of had it done 2 years ago.
