Getting dog to stand on feet

What can you do to get a dog to get up on his toes more,would love to have some ideas.thanks

I've used beer bottle lids, thumb tacks, stones and wooden slats. Once they learn what you want from them (if they are able to do so, some dogs are just flat footed period) its very easy to get them up on their toes and stay there. Genes have a lot to do with it also.

Just remember, a GOOD judge can pick out a 'stacked' dog and will find those flat feet fast. Also, keep the toenails very short.

Would you please explain how you use beer bottle lids, thumb tacks, and stones to get a dog up on it's toes. And how can a GOOD judge pick out a flat footed dog if it is stacked?. Now I don't know about all this so please fill me in.

If the dogs feet are built right it shouldn't have to get up on its toes to make them appear arched.

Most dogs like to lean back on their front legs on the bench. By placing bottle cap, etc at the very back of dog pad, they soon learn that it hurts and if the stand up on their front legs and toes, it doesn't. Press on the back, a dog will relax their stance and you can get a good look at their top line. I have shown coonhounds since '98 and made many, many GRCH and CH. Bred a lot of my own dogs too. I have been a BSJ since '01 and can spot a fault a mile away. But, it is my job to pick the best dog from what is presented to me and trust me, if the quality is poor, it is harder then a bunch of good dogs.

I will be more then happy to talk to anyone that has questions, my number is below, call me late afternoon or evening.

The single best way to get a dog up on their toes is in their genes, but I have seen a lot of dogs go flat footed on the bench because they are scared, so work those dogs on the bench everyday AND MAKE IT FUN for the dog, lots of PRAISE!

Now I am getting the picture I think but U left out the tacks where do they go and what do they do? and please explain the top line what part does that play?

Your wanting to get them up on their toes right? I use what I call breaking sticks, which is basically a piece of board. The pic I'm posting if for you to see what I'm talking about, and she's just learning!!! And I know she isn't set right and all that, LOL!!
Oh and she's very lazy and wants to not get up on her feet!!

How do all these dogs that high step like a horse with their front feet when they gate ,dogs that the rear hips set higher than their shoulders , and dogs who have to be stretched too far to make their hocks vertical win all the time.. I dont know jack crap about showing but I know in depth about angulation and structure. Could somebody explain what Im missing? Could it be most judges them selves dont know what theyre looking for or is it politics?

I hate to see a dog 'camped out'. That means they are over angulated and to make that nice top line, you got to stretch them to do so. People, you want a BOX, not a rectangle. If a dog has the proper gait, you should be able to imagine placing a wine glass full behind their withers and it not moving as the dog is gaited. I use to road my dogs and just loved to watch them gait and see the top of their back not moving, it was like they were just floating along.

Bait not needed

Have never nor do I know anythang about beer bottle caps, tacks or anything like that. And NEVER heard the turm "camped out" and placing a full wine glass behind their withers as they gate just BLOWS my mind I sure would like to see that feet though. And to top it all off Can't believe anyone would call you and say I am calling you out, Now that would never happen I don't have a mean bone in my body, Humm You know a person is never to old to learn. I like talking and learning about showing a dog. Now if you would look back on the last few years you would know I have not been showing much that is because I have not had anything worth a dang BUT maybee a fer beer bottle caps and some tacks along with other tricks that I don't know I could have been back in the shows. BUT I GOT A GOODON COMMING ALONG NOW SO WATCH OUT. he,he,
Now as far as JUDGING yep had a card and did not like what I saw so I sent in it simple as that. H L Meyer

Yesser I sure did, He was TIGHT on track and not much of a tree dog either. He was bred twice had 2 pups in one litter and don't remember about the other but do remember a young man had one and had good results with it . The last dog was not much. BAD TO THE BONE ON THE BENCH THOUGH.

I forget what female he was out of. Would not look at a coon. Great dog on bunch. Hated other people when I was not around. Finished to gr ch. Growed at my 7 gr old, last day at my place. Gave him to guy in wv to keep on farm. Never heard of him again.
