Good idea or bad idea?

Do you think it's a bad idea to hunt a pup by herself without a tracking collar?

That's what I was thinking. They've hunted more years without trackers than they have with them

I can't afford one at the age of 15 so I guess the only way to hunt her is without one so you're right, why not

Oh, I think all the new gadgets that have came around in the last 10 years or so are great,, but if they now become a requirement for coon hunting,, or enjoying the sound of a hound,, then now it costs a person a $1000 just to turn his or her dog loose. Like I said,, I think their Great,, but a Bad idea,, not really,, folks have had a lot of fun for a lot of years without them, jmo.

Lack of a tracker would not keep me from hunting a pup or an old dog.

Ill start with, I hunt my dogs with a tracker always have. But back in the 64 wildlife days many nights I hunted for my dog all night long and couldn't find him. I layed my coat down where I cut him and when I came back in the daylight he would be layed there on my coat. Only didnt work once. Get a collar with your name and number at the very least to put on your hound but I recommend a tracker! I value my hounds but if I couldn't afford a tracker you can bet your bottom dollar I would still be hunting!

I would atleast put a name tag and a flashing light on its collar..That way you can see which way it went and if its near roads this well help it not become roadkill.Sportdog and tracker sells them for less than 20 bucks.Goodluck

If you don't have access to a collar then you are running the risk of loosing thedog and never seeing it again....

The lighted collar is a great idea...I used one on my pup when we sent out collars to get new batteries put in...he didn't range real far and listened well...I still knew I ran a risk....I just stayed with that light...

Dad and I used cow bells on our first dogs till dad could buy a tracking system...we followed the jingle bells...it worked and could hear em a long ways away...

I rarely ever need to get the tracker out...but the few times a year I do it saves me a lot of time and I get my dog gathered up...

I remember twice as a kid the tracker literally saved our dogs life...once he was in a giant community brush pile...collars hung up..he couldn't move and could hardly bark and couldn't be heard till we were on top of him...

The other he got in a drain pipe...barely big enough for him to go in...couldn't turn around and got stuck where the pipe necked down to a smaller pipe...had to call in an excavator...

Anything can happen any time you turn a dog loose...that's reality of running dogs....

One time when I was a kid dad bought me a pup...he was 4-6 months old I'd guess...we took him for a walk in the day time...he mannered well...came when called etc...we were walking a trail on a creek bottom...pup was running and exploring just ahead of us...well he disappeared... to this day I still have no idea where he went...we searched for 2 days...he was gone....only thing I could figure was he fell in the creek and drowned...I really have no idea though....almost 20 years later and I still wonder and think about him when I am back there...

Wish we would put a collar on him that day....

Anything can happen...but with a tracking collar you can typically find them...

put a collar on your dog with a name plate with your phone number on it,also make sure your dog will come to ya when you call or whistle for him.

It's been well over 25 years since I have turned one loose without a tracking collar but that sick feeling you get when they have been gone for quite a while without a sound is still very clear in my memory. Although I agree you do not need one, oh what a piece of mind it is knowing they are wearing one.

seems every time i pull mine out the dog strikes. lol but I've hunted hounds of all types without trackers in the past. seems on the deer dogs i actually spend more time looking for dogs now than in the past. the old dogs come looking for me whereas the younger ones now know ill come looking for them. my fault. point is like others have said "hunt him" and have fun.

That would be like saying if you can't afford top quality feed and excellent veterinary care that you should get rid of your dog.

If you can't afford it then you can't afford it, no matter how great it would be to have one.

Hunt.
